No matter what we do, it will never be like the midwest. Can we improve our hunting? We sure can. Find 2000 acres of land to lease, with only 4 members. Improve the habitat. Limit the pressure, only hunt a few times a year. Only take 1 buck a year. In, say a decade, you'll have less pressured, more mature deer. Not easy is it. I don't think the midwest has huge chunks of unbroken land, like we have here. 300-400 acre farms have little woods surrounding them. Strips of woods between fields, funnels deer, and make them easier to kill. I have friends who know nothing about deer, go to Indiana and kill 150 class deer. Like shooting bucks in a barrel. I would guess the only challenge for the good local hunters is waiting on a net BnC, a 190"er or something truely exceptional.

Too many people spend money they don't have , on things they don't need, to impress people they don't know.

The concept of "hunting clubs" is foreign to the Midwest folks. They just don't do that up there. Going back to a comment I made earlier, we overhunt the land (just too many people hunting the same tract) and we do so with worse hunters. This is true for clubs and WMAs. When I've been to WMAs in Kentucky and Illinois, there are less people (and frankly it's a better class of hunter). When I think of WMA hunters around here, I think of Joe Dirt with his blue jeans, combat jacket, and 1979 Remington Woodsmaster, shooting a spike that he jumped after he walked in on me and messed my hunt up. When I think of the Iowa WMA hunter I think of a modern-equipped, serious conservation-minded hunter, packing a Lone Wolf loc-on in and shooting a mature deer with his bow. Yes, those are stereotypes, and they're not universal, but the images exist for a reason. My point is the #1 limiting factor (in my opinion) is other people. The whole concept of a hunting club automatically affects the quality of a hunting experience. I'd rather be the only guy (or two) on a large farm (Midwest type scenario) than one of 30 guys on 3000 acres of pine trees in Alabama. We can't help that, but it's my answer to the question of limiting factors. When I'm just one of multiple people who have hunted from that shooting house on the powerline this season (even this WEEK), and there's already been mutliple gun shots from that stand this season (even this WEEK), then that is a VERY limiting factor to my hunting success.

That is a SIMPLE problem to solve!!!! Buy or Lease your OWN property! Or. move to the mid-west and buy a Lone Wolf Loc-On....
