all of the above. get used to your rifle practice religiously. its got to feel comfortable and natural to you. me and a buddy swaped for a day once his a-bolt is a fine rifle but it didnt feel natural to me. im used to my tikka. and if you ever get one that shoots anything well keep it.

This is part of the reason I'm selling a Finnlite.....I have used a Ruger M77 for 15 seasons now and I just can't leave it at home when I head to the woods....especially since I had the trigger works 3 years ago....I'd have to look at my kill sheet to verify but I think I'm 49 for 51 with it on deer....

I disagree with the 1.5-2 pound trigger on a deer hunting rifle. There is no need for such a light trigger. If the trigger has no creep and minimal travel 4 pounds is plenty light enough.

very cold weather, gloves, cold fingers and light triggers do not go well together.

Pawpaw Troy is right here. 3.5lbs is the lowest I will go on a hunting rifle. Just make sure no creep and no over travel.

I think another factor is that people that have pump or auto loading rifles may tend to have the thought that if I miss him the first shot I'll get him with the second or third one.

All non custom rifle makers know they have to produce rifles of GOOD accuracy. They know "marginal" or "so-so" is not good enough. They know hunters EXPECT a solid gun, complete with a GOOD trigger and MOA accuracy. SO, IMHO, the make & caliber of a rifle is not the main factor.

Optics. It has already been said; "Spend more $$ on optics then on the gun". Spend as much money on optics as you can afford. And then save up (or borrow or beg) and upgrade when you can. There is a huge difference in a $70 Simmons and a $800 Zeiss Conquest.

Shooter Skill, Experience, Confidence.
The most accurate rig in the world will be only "marginal" in the hands of a shooter that lacks form, lacks confidence or flinches. Iv seen MANY hunters/shooters have a NICE gun/optics set up and shoot it horribly, and "someone else" take it and shoot the eye of a fly at 300 yards. Even a rig with marginal accuracy can be shot with better by a shooter with superior skills then someone inferior skills. Superior skills comes with practice, practice, practice (experience), and the more practice you have the more familiar you become with your rig which builds confidence. You got to shoot the thing, a lot!
A lot of hunters/shooters got for a "macho" caliber like a .300Mag or 7mmMag, and shoot it with marginal accuracy. You have to, MUST, be 100% comfortable with the gun you shoot; bolt, pump, auto or single shooter.

Good Short Read on Rifle Accuracy

And Another

Seriously, I have a $300 Slug Gun that will touch holes @ 100, and shoot inside a paper plate @ 200, but it's because I've got a $400 Nikon BDC on it.
My Tikka T3 is a doggone laser and only cost $550, but again I've got a big expensive scope on it.

Its depends on what you want out off a hunting rifle. I have custom rifles for a reason. I may want to shoot another deer at 702 yards. That means a heavy barrel, jewell trigger, and a nightforce for me! But if im in a treestand it might be a m70 300wsm with a 2.5x10x56 Nikon monarch. The point is , what makes a GOOD bplt action gun to 1 man is not going to be the same to the other man. Does anyone REALLY want to own just one gun??? My hunting rifles are basicly Mission Specific. I carry a factory gun sometimes and sometimes a full custom longrange rifle, i let the situation speak for its self!! grin

I run a 20yo A-Bolt that I feel comfortable with from 5 to 500 yards. Only time I've removed the scope caps is when Hornaday came out with Light Mags. Composite stalker in .308. Putsem to sleep...

One does not need a custom rifle, nor a heavy barrel, custom trigger, or high power expensive scope to kill deer at long (700 yards) range...

My Rem 700(glass bedded and trigger adjusted) with a Leupold 3.5X10 has killed a deer at 625 yards with me behind the trigger. It will shoot 4-6" groups at that distance, been there and done that.

All you need is a normally accurate rifle, a good range finder, and know yer trajectories at distance. Oh, and a deer that will stand still......

Heck, I killed that deer with a 130gr NBT, so it can't be that hard.... rofl

One may not need it, but i still want it! grin The question is repeatability. Can you do it everytime. Thats why in certain situations I choose a custom rifle. Its all about choice to me. I quess thats why i own over 100 guns! I have shot deer at 503 yards with a 2.5x10x56 S&B , but i dint want to have to do it everytime! With a custom rifle it allows me to shoot as far as i can range with my Vectronix Vector 4. Well not relly 7000 yards but you get the idea. If the conditions are right, and i see the right deer , i have no problem shooting 1000 yards at a good deer! Do i need a custom rifle? Yes in some situations. Its all about choice and where you hunt. Thats why most of my ELR hunting rifles have 14 oz Jewell triggers, because thats what i like! grin

Big difference in what a person wants, needs and can afford.

I have a close friend that has a $4000 rifle with a $3500 scope sitting on top of it.
The gun is in .300Mag. The total cost of my rig is $800. It is a 25.06. Dead deer know no difference in which one of us put a bullet through it's heart, lung, spine.

The reality is that most folks cannot afford a custom gun and all the bells and whistles that go with it.
The reality is, even if a person has a top of the line custom rig but cannot shoot worth a hoot, the capability of the gun/scope is of little value.

A consistent gun, consistent ammo, consistent shooter are all absolutely necessary for shooting accurately. It is a combination of factors, not just/only the custom built bolt gun, or the high quality optics on top.

There is also a BIG difference in a "hunting" rig and a "bench" rig.
Hunting:
4MOA at 100-150 yards is deadly - means all bullets within a 6" circle at 150 yards
3MOA at 200 yards is deadly - all of the bullets within a 6" circle at 200 yards
2MOA at 300 yards is deadly - all bullets within a 6" circle at 300 yards
(2MOA = 2" group at 100 yards will open up to 6" at 300 yards) (deadly in a hunting situation)
1.5MOA = 1.5" at 100 yards, 3" at 200 yards, 6" at 400 yards
In the real world of hunting, these accuracies are realistic and reasonable. There is little to no reason to expect accuracy above and beyond this. Accuracy beyond this is rare.

Bench shooting is a totally different world. Time, Energy and Money is dumped into the development of single load that performs in an EXCELLENT way in an individual gun. Massive amounts of time and energy go into developing shooting form that is flawless, reliable and consistent. Accuracy of this type is not necessary in the world of hunting.

No it not. Especally for me! I dont want and will not stand for 4 moa= this is piss poor accuracy!! If you can shoot better than 2 moa-4 moa you dont deserve to get a shot at a deer! This Accuracy is not neccesarry crap make me sick! I want to kill WHAT ever i shoot at cleanly. If you dont shoot past 300-400 yards then get what ever feels best to you! But to say real accuracy is not needed is insulting to those of us that CAN kill a deer at any range they want to shoot it at! Personally if my gun would not shoot better than 1.5 moa, i can honestly say i would get ridd of than piece off crap!!!

I would be willing to bet my hard earned money that YOU are not capable of shooting groups of what you are claiming.
The number of times I have witnessed a person proving their accuracy claims over 40 years has been limited to the single digits of one hand.

I will shoot for ANY amount you can afford! 10 dollars a shot or 10,000. There are SEVARAL peole here on ALDEER that have seen me shoot a rifle. Just name a place and bring your big mouth and money! I have the competetion wins and the skill set to do anything i say i can with a rifle. From 20 yards to 2300 yards! I dont shoot 7-8ooo rds a year , and fear a challange. So bring your big mouth and lots of cash or move-on.

CPiper if you're gonna bet with him you might wanna start out at $10 a shot unless you're extremely wealthy and losing large sums of money doesn't bother you.
I've seen him shoot before.
