In your opinion, what are things that separate an average bolt gun from a great one? I've never owned an expensive one mainly because I prefer not to spend the money and don't see the need. Is it a nice finish? Smooth bolt? Sub MOA accuracy?

- predictable pattern/accuracy
- carries/shoulders/points naturally
- mechaninsms operate slickly with a solid feel and sound
- quality appearance
- all of the above inspire a confidant, non distracting, feeling when in the field

accuracy,Can be the ugliest rifle on the earth as long as it shoots the eye out of a deer at 200 yards.I wont keep a rifle it dont shoot no matter how it looks.

Spend $200 on a gun, and $500 on a scope,instead of the other way around. Don't skimp on mounts either. Your only as accurate as your optics. Savage,Remington,Ruger, Browning are all fine weapons, and are deadly accurate. I would love to have a custom made rifle, but i will never own one, unless someone else pays for it. Its all about preference. We are trying to kill deer, not win target competetions out to 1000 yards.

Even though I don't get to shoot much, I'm an accuracy fan. I also like dependability. I have found both with Tikka T3 Lite rifles. Not the least expensive, yet not as pricy as some. A good middle of the road rifle that gives me the two things I like in a rifle.

My Dad always said a rifle is on as good as the scope that's on it. I am a firm believer in that. Even though I don't get to shoot much, I'm an accuracy fan. I also like dependability. Tikka's are dang fine rifles. Smooth action, very accurate, great trigger and they are very well balanced. My favorite deer rifle is my tikka 243.

For me I like the smooth and tight action of a Steyr. I've had Remingtons and Winchesters before but nothing I have shot yet will come close to comparing to my Steyr. I like the quiet roll of the safety, and I like my trigger set at 1.5lbs too.

1. balance and feel. It has to point naturally for an all round deer rifle
2. accuracy, 1" er less today, tomorrow, next year, every year
3. decent trigger. One cannot shoot accurately offhand without a good trigger.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I'll tell ya something else. Find you a good rifle and keep it. Some people like to change rifles like they do underwear, you know the people that have to have the new matthews bow every 2 years. Become famailar with your rifle and it will become an extension of your arm. Nothing like famailarity to become a deadly shooter. I know a guy that takes 3 different rifles hunting every year, for different situations, so he says. Misses deer all the time. I agree with having a 1.5-2lb trigger for accuracy.

Ya'll notice I said a decent/good trigger. I did NOT say light.
I disagree with the 1.5-2 pound trigger on a deer hunting rifle. There is no need for such a light trigger. If the trigger has no creep and minimal travel 4 pounds is plenty light enough.
very cold weather, gloves, cold fingers and light triggers do not go well together.

Even if you enjoy shooting other rifles and trying them out, IMO if you don't have one "go to" gun that you'd grab out of a stack of 20 then you haven't shot enough to find that one and become comfy with it. I've read three books lately -- Damn Few, American Sniper and Lone Survivor -- and having that intimate familiarity with a rifle resonated in all three. The same is true for hunters, I think, or good hunters.
