One congressman quoted in the article refers to the Confederate flag as "vile." Reminds me of a federal court case a few years back when I was Chairman of Autauga Co. school board. During my deposition, an NAACP lawyer accused the school board of racism for allowing a Confederate monument to remain on a school property. In a sarcastic and condescending tone the lawyer asked, "Can you not see that the Confederate flag is a symbol of slavery and suffering of my people?"

I replied, "Well, so is cotton, but I believe that's a cotton shirt you are wearing sir."

Heritage not hate, that's what I told WSFA a few years ago when they were at the Andalusia Winn Dixie parking lot interviewing folks about a huge confederate flag flying in a neighborhood behind the store. I asked the reporter afterwards, what's the general consensus of everybody.. she said the same thing it doesn't bother them. So, I turn on the news and the only one they aired about it was the mad black woman raving racism.

It amazes me that so many people focus on tying the Confederate flag to Slavery when in fact there was so much more to the War between the states. I heard a black historian not to long ago comment that if people would do their homework they would realize that few if any white men set foot on the African shores. The waring tribes of Africa would bring prisoners for other tribes to be sold for profit. History is written by the winner, in this case it is the North. As for the flag I see it as nothing more than a turbulent time in our nations history, one hopefully we will not repeat.

But who prays for Satan? Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most?

I am not a racist at all. I love all humans and treat everyone the same, also believe that every body has equal rights.

The Civil War wasn't just about freeing slaves. It was more about states rights. The North wanted big federal government, the south wanted small federal government and the States to govern themselves. I think that the federal government has become to big, and has way too much power.

I am not a history buff, or an economist, or an expert on the U.S. government, I just use common sense. I think that the states should govern themselves. If a guy doesn't like the laws of Alabama, he can move to the fruitcake states of the West Coast.

Just the way I see things.

Not to mention they were trying to tax the south to death...

Not surprised because that's what liberals do. They try to ban everything they don't like or disagree with and try to shove their way of thinking down our throat.

Why don't we focus on the disrespect that our nations flag endures on a daily basis. Do something about that.

I had family in the war. NONE owned slaves. In fact only a handful of people owned slaves. These owners were rich landowners who made their money on the backs of slaves. These people didn't care about the common folk like my ancestors and for some crazy reason they fought a war for these rich slave owners. Sound familiar? It should cuz several of the wars we have fought were fought on the backs if everyday common folk FOR the rich who control this country. Bush sent our 19 year old boys and girls to fight an enemy that had no weapons that we were led to believe. Kennedy and Johnson sent our young men to fight in Vietnam to appease the rich and powerful. Afghanistan, same story.
We have fought two wars that were legitimate threats to our freedom, WWI and WWII. The rest were fought using the common man's children to save not freedom, but to further line the pockets of the rich (slave owners, if you will).
Slavery WAS the primary reason the Civil War was fought from the viewpoint of the Union and unfortunately the winner gets to write the history books. I'm southern and oroud to be but not ignorant of the fact that we fought for the wrong side. Slavery is brutal and inhumane. No person should ever have to endure slavery. Our forefathers were wrong, very wrong. The right thing happened and I'm sure God was on the Union's side for that reason alone.
The flag is a symbol of slavery, racism, and the old antiquated south that rose on the backs of slaves. I don't know about you but there is zero pride to garner from that. The flag doesn't bother me but does remind me of an embarrassing time in the south's history. I can also see where it would be threatening to black people.

I believe it was a mixture of both. Can you imagine the difference in this country if the South had won the war and states rights were still recognized fully by our US Courts and our legislatures, both federal and state?

I nearly got thrown out of a House committee meeting during the last session of the Alabama legislature for defending our gun rights as protected by our STATE'S constitution.

Our right to bear arms for defense is "excepted out of the general powers of government" (Article I, Declaration of Rights, Section 36) in our own state's constitution, but the members of our state legislature choose to ignore the state constitution that created it and infringe on our right to bear arms for defense while relying on federal case law as it applies to our US Constitution.

Not to start an argument, but the flag that is usually known as "The Confederate Flag" is not the Confederate flag. The flag that is known as the "Stars and Bars" is actually the first flag of the Confederacy. What most people recognize as the "Confederate Flag" is actually "The Battle Flag of The Army of Northern Virginia" or , The Flag of the Army of Tennessee. The Stars and Bars was the flag that was hoisted above the first Capital in Montgomery.

You want to guess which flag flew over Slavery longer than any other flag ?

Let's see them try to ban that one !!!!
