worked a bad wreck one day bout 3:00 pm on 119 between montevallo and alabaster had a fatality and had the road shut completly down north and south bound due to the car and pt we in the middle of the road.. AST (state troopers) showed and and demanded we open the roan and i kindly told him no, this is my pt, my scene and im shutting it down for safety reasons and for respect for the deceased, he stated since there was not a living pt i had no control over anything on scene, i told him if i open the road then me and my crews are going back to the fire house, he said i had to stay and help with traffic .. told him ill help with traffic, i kept the road shut down I'll take the bait: why? Why was it impotant to you to keep a road shut down if there was no safety issue? How is closing a road & causing numerous problems, maybe even a different safety issue, showing respect for the dead? Who taught you that it was a proper thing to do? I understand being concerned about being ran over while working on the side of the road, but honestly I see a lot of emergency vehicles causing traffic snarls for no reason other than they can. The rest of the world doesn't need to be punished because someone got in a wreck & you were called out there, do they?

It's all about safety Vulkanman. I HATE being stuck in traffic also, but I don't trust not one single person driving by me with just a couple feet to spare. It's not worth the risk to not shut down whatever it takes to make it safe (WITHIN REASON). I wouldn't dare completely shut down 65 with the fire truck for a wreck on the shoulder, but if it's in the middle of it, you have to. I'm sure you are well aware of the types of drivers and people there are out there. Sorry for the hijack. Again, prayers for those involved.

CANT MOVE THE VEHICLE OR PT UNTIL THE CORONER ARRIVES AND TAKES PICS AND ALL KINDS OF THINGS,, THEN YOU HAVE THI THAT HAS TO TAKE ALL KINDS OF PICTURE AND EVIDENCE, THERE WAS NO WHERE FOR CARS TO PASS ON THE SHOULDER OR I WOULD HAVE OPENED ONE LANE HALF WAY UP SO THEY COULD HAVE USED THE SHOULDER.. GUESS I SHOULD HAVE STATED THAT IN THE FIRST POST

What is the legal standing, law, basis, etc. for "respect for the dead," too?
It's nice but I'd like to see that mentioned in a law or statute. Is one available?
Safety issue, certainly.

CLEM TO MY KNOWLEDGE THERE ISNT. I RIDE IN THE FIRE TRUCKS NOT THE POPO CARS.. IF ONE OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS WAS LAYING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WOULD YOU WANT EVERYONE WITH A CAMERA RIDDING BY POSSIBLY TAKING PICTURES AND POSTING THEM ALL OVER THE INTERNET AND EVERYTHING, WHAT IF YOU HADNT BEEN NOTIFIED THAT YOUR FAMILY MEMBER WAS DEAD AND SAW A PICTURE ON FACEBOOK WITH THE CAR TORE UP FROM HELL AND A DEAD BODY NEXT TO IT. HECK OF A WAY TO GET NOTIFIED THAT YOUR LOVED ONE HAS PASSED.

As much as I drive traveling for work I see a lot of accident scenes. It absolutely amazes me how the public approaches it as an inconvenience to their busy day and is in such a hurry that they don't seem to care about anything else but themselves.
Please be considerate of those working the scene and how they are risking their lives to help others and you.

You would be surprised how many people come to court and argue their failure to move over tickets. The statute requires drivers on a four lane road to move to the opposite lane or slow to 15 mph below the posted limit. Most folks simply do not appreciate the hazardous conditions our troopers, law enforcement and other first responders work in every day. One of the toughest cases I have ever had to handle as a judge was a child custody case where the mother was killed in an accident on I-65 working as an EMT at an accident scene.

But it's not lawful to shut down a major federal interstate "out of respect for the dead." Sorry, but it's not. If it's for safety or a crime scene or the coroner and investigators need to come make photos-measurements, that's fine and expected.

Prayers for the family. She should have been covered.I belive that was very disrespectful. They weren't trying to be disrespectful. Only a couple of other officers had arrived at the scene and they were busy trying to save those they could save. As horrible a sight as it was, they did the right thing concentrating on trying to save the ones that could be saved. I've been to couple of horrible scenes with some friends before. And they took there jackets off their own backs to cover their faces. That's all I meant..

I don't mind being in the projects in the middle of the night, enjoy being in a burning building, and blood and guts dont bother me. But I hate working on the side of the "big road". It is the most dangerous thing we do, and we are out there alot, the strech we cover in opelika is bad. X 10

As a Fire Chief, I see both sides of this discussion. We as firefighters are taught to block the scene to protect all involved. The police officers are taught to get the roadway cleared move the traffic. In our city, we have a good relationship with the officers and they know we will shutdown traffic and have it opened back as soon as safe for us to do so. On state highways, there is a little more opposition when a trooper arrives. Not all, but some, have been difficult at best to work with. Usually the new ones out of the academy are the most difficult. I have been on scenes and heard of incidents where we (firefighters) have been the difficult ones to deal with.
Each scene is different, and communication and good working relationships go along way.
Prayers to the families of the deceased.
