It never fails while you are speeding down the interstate, that you see those blue flashing lights ahead and you have to try and get over. I always do this, even though it is aggravating at times. Yesterday, I saw why laws have been changed to force this action and why we should all take the time to make sure we safely get over to give those officers space to do their work.

My wife and I were returning home from Melbourne, FL yesterday and traffic started backing up on I-75 just South of Ocala. I noticed the blue flashing lights just ahead of us and as we inched closer, I could see folks both scrambling and standing around on the South bound side of 75. There were a few cars involved in the wreck, but it didn't look to be all that serious. As we got beside the wreck, there were 2 other officers and bystanders trying to lift something up. At this point, traffic was at almost a complete stop and my wife mentioned that an FHP car was also involved. We were at the very end of the wreck and when I glanced over, I saw something that shook me to my core. There by themselves, away from all the other people, was an FHP officer that had been run over and was obviously dead. I wish I had pulled over and put a blanket over them. We found out later that the officer was a female and that a tow truck driver was also killed. They were trying to clear up a previous wreck when another wreck happened at the same spot. frown

Yep. You'd be surprised at the people that won't pull over for personnel working incidents on the roadways. Heck, most won't even slow down. You have to keep your head on a swivel at all times. That's a sad situation.

Your lucky you got through that mess. If you'd have been a mile back you would have spent the night. We are doing that construction right before that and it was bad.

I-75 traffic is insane. 85mph just keeps you in the flow of traffic. It's like 3 wide at Talladega, without the professional drivers. Doesn't surprise me when I see a story like this there on 75.

On top of that, where the Florida Turnpike north merges into I-75 is just plain insanity. Very poor design by the engineers to bring the two of them together so close to the exit for Hwy 44. It's always a cluster.

I always go to the passenger side of the vehicle on a traffic stop. Been clipped by rearview mirrors a time or too. If its a lot of traffic I'll go ahead and block a entire lane with my directionals on.

something similar happened just down the road here not long ago. Trooper got hit by an 18 year old girl who was doing nothing illegal or wrong, the trooper had the car pulled over in a blind curve. Not sure if he lived but he was life flighted to Bham.

Man I hate that frown
I'll block every lane I can with the fire truck to keep us (fireman), the police, wreck victims, and tow truck guys safe. Shoot me a bird, cuss me, whatever you gotta do to make yourself feel better, but it ain't worth something like this happening. Terrible. Prayers for all involved.

That interchange is getting reconstructed soon.

I don't mind being in the projects in the middle of the night, enjoy being in a burning building, and blood and guts dont bother me. But I hate working on the side of the "big road". It is the most dangerous thing we do, and we are out there alot, the strech we cover in opelika is bad.

worked a bad wreck one day bout 3:00 pm on 119 between montevallo and alabaster had a fatality and had the road shut completly down north and south bound due to the car and pt we in the middle of the road.. AST (state troopers) showed and and demanded we open the roan and i kindly told him no, this is my pt, my scene and im shutting it down for safety reasons and for respect for the deceased, he stated since there was not a living pt i had no control over anything on scene, i told him if i open the road then me and my crews are going back to the fire house, he said i had to stay and help with traffic .. told him ill help with traffic, i kept the road shut down

I agree with the statements the other firefighters made as a driver of the fire department the safety of the crew and LEOs is more important then traffic. I will shut down as many lanes as it takes to keep us safe. We had a engine damaged a few weeks ago while working a MVC on I65 thankfully no one was injured.

They weren't trying to be disrespectful. Only a couple of other officers had arrived at the scene and they were busy trying to save those they could save. As horrible a sight as it was, they did the right thing concentrating on trying to save the ones that could be saved.
