I can honestly say I dont think theres much difference in the kick of a 3" or 3 1/2.
When I pattern I sit on the ground kinda leaned back & let them kick me back. Shooting at a turkey I dont notice the kick at all.
One big mistake ive done is laying one across the tool box of the truck & leaning in like I would a rifle. That will leave a mark.
