Alabama will never have the monster bucks that the Midwest has. No matter how they change the bag limits. Period!

Well my guess is Alabama and Kentucky do not have the same amount of Sq. mileage..

Alabama has 51,718 square miles and a population of 4.8 million people.
Kentucky has 40,411 square miles and a population of 4.3 million people.

I have experience on both sides of this deal. I hunted Alabama hard for over 20 years before moving to Oklahoma. There is no comparison. The public land I deer hunt here will put most private land in Alabama to shame. I said most, not all. There is not near the same amount of cover here for deer to hide in and there are thousands of acres in corn and soybean and wheat etc... for the deer to eat and grow big. No doubt the deer here are easier to kill, you find a 50 acre piece of cover you have hit the jack pot. Hunt it with any sense and you will see deer no doubt about it. Alabama, although a great hunting state will never compare with the Midwest states, there are just factors in the Midwest that won't ever be in place in Alabama and I'm not talking about bag limits. That being said, smaller bag limits will naturally produce more deer walking around to grow bigger. The limit is Ok is two bucks period. Most folks let the young ones walk...

Until Alabama's cash crop is soybeans and corn instead of pine trees our deer and the hunting will not be like theirs. Limits or no limits......also it wouldn't hurt if all this acidic soil was magically replaced with some neutral black topsoil either.

So y'all don't think going to one buck a year wouldn't produce more and bigger bucks ?

With Alabama's joke for a game check system .. Now folks just make copy's of their lic and just keep killing unlimited bucks .. Who's to stop them ?

Comparing AL to Kentucky is like comparing grapes to watermelons.

And for the record, There are WMAs in AL with tons of agriculture, equipment to get it done, and a lot of active management. Comparing Bankhead(Black Warrior is where I work), which is a USFS owned area, with a small budget, very few planting opportunities, and terrible soil, to ANYTHING else is ridiculous. We've rotated summer and winter crops since I have been there. Not sure what you have been looking at to make such claims and being wasteful with money, but I've worked my tail off out there the last few years doing things the previous few biologist didn't touch.

Where I hunt in North Alabama corn and soy IS the cash crop. Im surrounded by THOUSANDS of acres of very high yield agriculture. The farmers are my friends and they can PLANT some crop thats for sure. And in the winter they put in thousands of acres of winter wheat.

From my experience hunting Illinois and Kansas the deer really do act a lot dumber than ours. Especially in the rut. Even big mature bucks can act somewhat stupid. Our deer are schizophrenic!

I killed a 172" buck in KS that acted like a a typical knothead in AL. I don't think I could have messed it up anyway I tried. I made all kind of noise, had a coyote come through, peed from the stand, coughed, ate a fruit bar that made a TON of noise, rubbed my loud clothes together while drawing on him in total calm conditions, made a marginal first shot, regrouped, and made a perfet shot 10 seconds later. They AIN'T the same animal.

as far as dumb deer go, the deer in the blackbelt are much much dumber than the deer around central alabama (shelby, talladega, randolph, and calhoun counties to name a few)

Sounds about right! I've seen 4 year old studs behave like a spike a ton of times in the Midwest.
