I have been hunting Alabama all my life, I am almost 60 and been at it since I was about 6 , started with my grandaddy and great uncles. Not that many deer until maybe sometime around the 70's where I am from. Went to Ky. last weekend to look around, I was really surprised. Not only at the number of deer we saw in fields and ones we jumped up, but how damn big they are compared to here on average. The does up there in western ky. are as big as a good buck here. Me and a couple of buddies are planning on hunting WMA's up there this coming season until hopefully we can find some to lease. Saw some shoulder mounts, horns, and skull mounts I could not believe.
But, according to what I have heard and read they are the number one state over everybody in Boone and Crockett deer harvested every year. I am sure the one buck a year has helped in that regard. And their state management is second to none. I hate to say this , but our state management and harvest practices are not working like theirs. Just wanted to pass this on , because I have seen it first hand.

I been hunting western Kentucky for about 15 years now .... lots of deer and monster bucks... good luck in finding a spot for you and your buddies..

I agree !!! Alabama has got to change !! Bama could have what Illinois and Kentucky have in 5 years if they would change the bag limit ... Once u see Kentucky's wma and the green fields crp fields and standing corn and beans every where ! Makes me mad at bama .. Bankhead is horrible with there money .. What do they spend it on ..

Once u see Kentucky's wma and the green fields crp fields and standing corn and beans every where ! Makes me mad at bama .. Bankhead is horrible with there money .. What do they spend it on .. As much as we want them too, all areas that whitetails range from the Atlantic to Pacific and Northwest Territories to Mexico, WILL NOT grow monster bucks with antlers to match .

There will be one hunter and a camera man in a lone tree in a fencerow, monster buck walks out in a wide open field 200 yards away. They make some awful sounding grunts and ol' Hightower comes on a run, stops looks up at them then comes closer and turns for a perfect bow shot.......please!

2 dogs--don't forget the hunter jerks his binoculars up to look, deer is 30 yards away, says in fairly loud voice, "he's a shooter", and if he makes a good hit, jumps up and down, holding his head and says wheeeee. All the time hyperventilating.

My club manages like IL, MO, IL, KS, KY, etc... and we're now shooting 160" bucks on a regular basis. Yep!!! All it took was to manage like the Midwestern states and boom, it happened!!!
On a serious note.... Western KY does have some monsters!!!

Alabama est. deer population is 1.8 million .. Kentucky is 900 thousand .. Alabama says an average of 25 per sq mile .. Kentucky est is 20 per sq mile .. Someone is lying !

A 170", they have more pics of than their kids and they gotta watch him a while through binos, all the while having a conversation, telling the viewer what we're seeing.  Not real world hunting, least the part of the world I've hunted in.
