OK. Went out this morning to listen in hopes of spotting one on roost for tomorrow. Well... I did. He gobbled about 20 times while on roost and I was able to pinpoint his location within 100 yards. I found a place to set up along a logging road in the AM and backed out, went to the landowners place for a cup of coffee and a chat. The bird was roosted about 50 yards from a road that splits the property. Figuring he was off roost (8 AM) when I left I slowed down in the area he was in earlier to see if I could get a better idea of where he was roosted earlier and... I bumped him off of the roost. Rookie mistake I guess. My question is, what are the odds that he will return to this roost site tonight? I won't be able to go tonight to see if he returns because of other obligations but I'm still headed there to set up in the morning. The property has few areas with mature trees so there is limited ares for roosting I would think. He was alone, no hens, didn't hear another bird at all. Thanks in advance!!!

Odds are he ain't going to roost in the same tree anyways so I wouldn't worry to much about it and just go hunting.

You never know, but you might as well slip in there EARLY and get to the spot you wanted to set up. Go ahead and get set up and wait and see where he gobbles from. If he's there, you are in good shape. If he's moved somewhere else, get up and go after him

I wouldn't worry about it honestly. You just never know about them things. He may be back in that same spot every day or he may move around a little. In my experience they are all a little different.

If you called to him earlier with a turkey call, he could have been simply just waiting for that "hen" to come to him. Someone else could have drove down the road and made him hold up in his tree a little more. Bottom line, don't worry about it and good luck in the morning, I would think he would be fairly close by.

He will be back in the general area,I'd be listening in the same spot in the morning

Thanks fellas. I've been turkey hunting on my own for several years off and on and never bagged one. He was gobbling on his own. I didn't even take a turkey call in the woods but he did shock gobble at my crow call a couple of times as I was trying to pinpoint him. Can't wait until the morning!!! If he is gobbling in the same area in the morning I am going to do some very light calling and the first time he answers I will just shut up and wait.

Yep sounds good. I would make sure I would be at that spot well before daylight so he cannot see you. Full moon may help him, but I still think you could get away with it as long as you didn't us a flashlight. ID make maybe one series of soft yelps to him on the limb then shut up.

No flashlight. Already marked my way to the spot. It is probably 80 yards from the tree he was in but the good news is that it is over a rise so I don't think he'd be able to see me. By the time we could actually see each other he would be within range. Not sure I'll sleep tonight.

If he is wearing one of them tracking collars he will be 6 miles down the road this evening.

The moment you think you can pattern a turkey is the exact moment he'll make a fool out of you...he'll let u know where he's at easy enough

Doubt he'll be in that area in the morning.

Luckily there is less than 200 acres for me to hunt. He'll either be there or he won't. If not, hopefully he will still be within earshot. Fingers crossed. The setup seems near perfect. Lone bird, no audible hens this am, logging road dead ends into the roosting area which is small and surrounded by 8 year old clearcut, I can get in quietly, ... Although, if he is there I will probably find some way to screw it up.

I find when you put this much thought and worry in it,hunting them becomes to much like work,and we are supposed to be out there to relax and enjoy ourselves.The bottom line is just go have fun,and let him decide what you need to do.I think if I had to map out,and study every bird I tried to kill,I would just quit,most of the birds I kill are birds that I just happen up on. One thing is for sure. I'll get to watch the woods come alive in the morning regardless.

Well. He wasn't there this morning. The only two gobbles I heard sounded like miles away. Still a beautiful morning and I'll be back at it the first chance I get.

Greene... Just means it was not his day to die... Your plan sounds like a good one... But 80 yds from roost tree is really close with the woods wide open... Good Luck chasing him and all of them !

It is amazing how far those suckers travel when they decide to go. Dad heard 4 gobble yesterday and watched them with 18 hens, today they were not where they were yesterday then finally on his way to breakfast he spotted all 22 of them in a field about a mile from where they were yesterday. That's how it goes and new ones may move in today. So keep after them one will be back there sooner or later.

Go hunt him and enjoy the moment.
