I have used metal supermarkets a good bit. They would sale you however long a piece you wanted and it was pretty reasonable if you was getting smaller quantitys. They never made me buy the whole stick it was cut to size. Bigger orders and we always used Sabel steel.

kendall, check with ONeal steel. If they ever deliver anywhere close to your area you could order the steel and get it delivered whenever they come that way so you won't have to pay full delivery price.
EDIT: Since you're not going to be making stuff to sell or making things in a production type environment, try to find 2nd's. It's a good bit cheaper than prime steel. I wouldn't buy 2nd's on plate but tubing would be okay. It may be split on the seam or slightly bent but you can work around all that if you're not trying to make money at it.

Besco steel supply in birmingham. They are awesome to work with and will do any cuts or anything you need. If you call it in and pay they will have it bundled up and ready when you get there. I have bought lots from them

Off Pine Lane in Bessemer.... Going south on 459 get off exit 6 and stay to right... Take first right by the gas station... Then first right again... That's Pine Ln... Go about a half mile and it's on your left... You can actually see it on your right from 459 before you exit...
