Not intending in any way to disparage this thread, but I learned a lot from the other one too. None of it was pleasant either.

If your family has lived in the South forever like mine, you are most likely related to a lot of people you never met.

I know the South has the reputation, but when I was stationed in New England, holy crap at Vermont and Maine. Saw some scary individuals.

My father in law put it to me this way. The choice is ride twenty miles into town on a mule or go across the field to your cousins house. shocked

When I moved to Livingston back in 1990, there was a family that hung out around the courthouse during the day. It was rumored that the kids were the children of one of there older sisters. They supposedly locked up the father shortly after I moved there. The boy and girl were probably in their late teens or early twenties and were forever more jacked up mentally and physically. The boy could hardly walk and the girl sounded like Nick Marshall when she talked. In all seriousness, it was heartbreaking to think of how they lived.

I once made the mistake of getting into the genealogy of my family. My mother and father were from adjacent farms down in the Alabama River swamp of south Monroe/north Baldwin counties. It wasn't the first time somebody had walked down the road between them. There were about 6 or 7 families in that little area, and they had been intermarrying since the early 1800's. I went to a big family reunion once, and my mother introduced me to a second cousin on her side. A little while later, my father introduced me to the same person as a fifth cousin on his side. A couple of years ago I took my wife to visit a couple of the old cemeteries in the area. When she saw the tombstones of all the same families intermarrying she said it went a long way toward explaining some of my quirks. grin

There's a LOT of marriage to "distant" cousins in small towns. I don't personally know any 1-3 cousins who have been married, but I know several 5+ cousins who married.

Sometimes you accidentally marry your cousin. Just saying.

We all came from Adam and Eve anyway. Maybe that explains the way we act and carry on most of the time. one prime example, just look at our politicians
