I find the halfway point, judge it and double it. Then I judge from the target back to myself in 5 yard increments and compare the two. This is only done while shooting 3D tournaments. On a live targets I use a rangefinder. I normally range trees and other things around my stand after I get set up. I rarely use my rangefinder prior to taking a shot unless I know it's over 40 yards.
