I try not to. Haha.
I have used a bracket type system. I look for something at 10 yards, then double that distance to 20 yards, then add 10 yards to that, and so on and so on.
83% of all statistics are made up.

I find the halfway point, judge it and double it. Then I judge from the target back to myself in 5 yard increments and compare the two. This is only done while shooting 3D tournaments. On a live targets I use a rangefinder. I normally range trees and other things around my stand after I get set up. I rarely use my rangefinder prior to taking a shot unless I know it's over 40 yards.

I guess I was really asking this for shooting 3-D, I always range from the tree soon as I get settled

I can usually find my 20 within a half yard or so. I'll judge in 5 yard increments from that. I also do like Shaw and find the half way and judge it.

I take it they don'tallow rangefinders Iin 3d?
Seems like the distances would get around between shooters with that many folks shooting the same ones.

There's a few rangefinder classes nowadays, but for the most part it's unknown distances. There's not as much info passed around as you think TC. Remember it's a competition. I sure as hell ain't gonna give someone any info they could use to beat me.

How do y'all judge yardage(without a rangefinder). When I shot years ago, I'd walk the woods, pick a spot, guess the yardage and then range it. That was as much important practice to me as shooting. Then you may see a pattern of how lots of light makes you think it's farther and lowlight looks closer (at least for me). Also stare the ground to your target butt at known distances. The best way is having all the targets you'll be shooting at and looking at them everyday. But that's out of most of our's realm.

I do it in 10 yard increments, I practice it a lot and can get within 2 yds most of the time out to 35. I use a range finder now though, great little tools. They are good to check your yardage guessing with too.
