Hated that damn thing. Seemed like every critter in the world loved that place. Spiders, rats, birds, chipmunks, snakes - guess over the years I encountered every one of them. Grandparents place. Late 1950s, Woodstock Al. Don't know what was worse - cold rainy nights or hot humid summers.

Had one at a hunting club i was in. didnt care for it much.

My great-aunt had one when I was a young sprout. I hated it. Thank goodness we didn't visit Great Aunt Outhouse too often. My great-grandmother had one but had gotten indoor plumbing by the time I was born.

Used one at 10,000 ft in the flat top wilderness area in the Rockies. That was one cold seat. The trick was to sit on the seat with your pants on to warm up the seat before you dropped the pants.

Been there ! Done that ! Great aunt had no indoor plumbing other than the kitchen sink when I was growing up. Spent many weeks at her house when I was young. Only place I had to hunt back in the day. (40 years ago in Detroit Al)

Used one at a hunting club I was in, I was happy to have a place to chit. I have used quite a few in Montana, at a bunch of boat ramps at the rivers there are pretty nice outhouses. What was also cool was at some of the boat ramps up there someone was running a service where you could launch your boat and pay a guy 10 bucks and he would drive your truck and trailer to another ramp 5 or 10 miles downriver and park it for you.

Few true outhouses. Tons of green or blue Johhny On the Spot's in the Army, for month or more at a time...

Funniest outhouse story I know of: Took my first wife (VERY city girl) up in CA mtns once. We get to the top of the mtn (8500 ft or so)after 2 hr drive. She has go. But won't go in the outhouse by the road. On the way back down, decides she HAS to go, so...

She goes in. Gets done. Asks how to flush it. Me being the regular SA I am "It flushes when you exit and close the door. That way they know it will get flushed." So - she comes out, closes the door, and puts her ear to the door to hear it flush. And nothing.

So she starts looking at me accusatorily. I tell her - it is an OUTHOUSE! "Well then, where does it go?" I explain it is just a seat over a hole in the ground! Man, she was royally pissed and could not believe that I had her sit over a hole in the ground full of stuff!

I was just plain flabbergasted...

I am 49 - I was born in a small sawmill town outside Hot Springs, Arkansas.

We didn't have an inside toilet till I was 3 (no septic system - bath, washing machine, and dish water drained outside house) then we moved to a duplex when my dad got a job at a bank.

Grandparents (on mom's side) didn't have one till I was 9 (same - no septic system) - their outhouse was a single door double chitter with no partition between the holes/seats. When you used their outhouse - you always used a scoop of lime to cover your business.

My dad jokes that when I was a baby we were so "po" that we couldn't afford the "or" to make us poor. Which is funny - I never noticed we were poor, because everyone else in our family was in the same boat. I wouldn't trade any of those experiences for all the money in the world - I'm not saying it made me a better person, but it made me resilient.

My mom and dad worked their asses off to provide for me and my sister and never took a government handout (even though I am sure we would have qualified), and after several years things changed for the better. I will always be thankful for my parents.

My hunting camp has one Sure beats being out in the woods when it's cold and windy.

This happened in Vietnam. 1970, Dau Tieng, 25th Infantry Div. Area of Operations. The outhouses had open bottoms in the back so you could slide cut off 55gal drums in and out. Had a papasan who's job was "shitburner". He burned s++t. Mixed diesel used a hoe to stir and burn. Any camp had lots of sh++ters so there were lots of sh+tburning going on. It was well known that at least half the camp workers (laundry, barbers, maids, mess hall, sh+tburners) were either VC or sympathizers. So when we would get hit solidly by rockets or mortars all outside help was not allowed in so they couldn't adjust their aim. Well, we'd been hit about four days straight and the outhouses were full. Over running. It was about ten one night, total dark, just had a dozen 80mm mortar rounds walk across camp but I had to go. Left the bunker, had a flashlight but wasn't going to use it till I got to the outhouse. Sh+t would pile up in the cans and I didn't want to rub my ass in it. Closed the door, turned on the light, raised the lid, and shined it down the hole. Well, it had been emptied. But a damn rat had got down there and could't get out. he jumped at me, I dropped the light, knocked out the bulb. So I'm in a sh+t house with the door locked fighting a nasty rat in the dark. Finally stomped his ass to death. Not a good night. If I would have sat down without looking the rat could have done irreparable damage.

Hunted a club in Tennessee with my dad when I was in school back in the 80's and the outhouse at camp sat over a small 5 foot rock bluff that then dropped another 40 foot down. This bluff faced due north and so did your back side when sitting down. There wasn't no need for a magazine rack in there, it was strictly business once seated.

Where I grew up it was 50/50 those that had indoor plumbing and those who did not. Luckily, we did have indoor plumbing.
I have used one several dozen time while spending the nights at friends houses who did not have indoor plumbing.
There where also several families that had no electricity. Those were all very old black folks though.

I have, other than a hunting camp too.

Both sets of grandparents had them and a great aunt when I was young back In The early 60s. I'm sure I visited other folks that had them as well. We visit a small church at Corinth when we stay at our cabin at Smith Lake that still has one even though I have not had to use it. They also don't have electricity or propane heat. A kerosene heater is it. Neat old church. Good folks too!

My grandparents had one and it was like a magnet to us kids. We used to like going to the outhouse. That thang stank and I don't know why we liked going, guess it was something different. And, since we didn't have to do it all the time, I reckon' it was okay.

Weird thing is, the first time I took my daughter hunting, I believe she was 7 at the time, there was an outhouse at the camp. I bet she went 8 or 10 times that day. She thought that was the neatest thing. Oh well, like dad, like daughter.

So glad for indoor plumbing. That should've probably been one of my things listed on the "Things you love" list.

Outhouses in Alabama are a walk in the park. Have used a bunch of them. Outhouses in the jungles of Nicaragua and Honduras will enhance your prayer life.

10 yeasr ago we had one at our sign in board. It fell to pieces in a storm. Limed the hole. Aquired a porta poddy(not sure how we got it) cut a hole in the bottom and moved it on top of the hole.we were high dollar there for a little while!!! But now its still just a porta jon!!!!
