I try to have a completely different mindset when I take my kids, versus when I get serious and go by myself. They are younger than yours though (5 and 7). I try to stay out of shooting houses with them. We'll build little hide outs off field edges. They play games for a little while, but I sit there and watch them play and they love Daddy's attention over the shoulder. As it gets dark, we put up games and I always point out the sights and sounds that I want them to know about and remember. But, Daddy still needs some ME time in the woods!

You definitely need some alone time. We all do. That being said, My advice is to take them boogers with you all you can stand. Before you can blink an eye they will be off in college or in the military and hunting time with them will be rare indeed. I've got way too much alone hunting time now and it's not as fun to me as it was in my 20's!

I will turn down some poon this time of year to be able to hunt the rut. Nothing at all wrong will telling your Sons, maybe next time you can go.

My dad turned me loose in the woods with a shotgun when I was 10 years old. Very seldom did he ever let me sit with him. The only time I can remember him doing it at all was a few times he tried to call a turkey for me. I blew one golden opportunity at a big gobbler and he pretty much quit trying after that; just turned me loose with a homemade box and told me to call one up and kill it by myself. I finally did, and I'm proud to be able to say that the first gobbler I ever killed I called up myself.
But looking back, I was probably a little too young to be given that much responsibility. Let'd just say I shot some stuff I wasn't supposed to shoot. I got my whippings and moved on. I think it made me a better hunter and helped me grow up because he wasn't right there to hold my hand while I learned to hunt. But each kid is different, so only you can decide when they are ready.

There is absolutely no one that I'd rather be in the woods with than my oldest son. (youngest two haven't started hunting yet) That being said, sometimes it's nice just to be there by myself and clear my head.

When my daughter was young and hunting with me I came to the point where I realized this was alot about her wanting to spend some time with her dad and not so much about killing deer. As she got older it got more to do with killing deer and she started sitting by herself and stacking up bucks. For me it was not an issue because working shift work made it possible for me to hunt for me during the week, but weekends and holidays it was all about us enjoying time together. Enjoy the time together because it will not be long and you will be hunting for yourself and by yourself alot more than you want to......

Everybody needs me time! I'm on me time now, took a week off to hunt and had my daughter with me all weekend and yesterday now everybody is back at school or work so it's time to do what I want.

Nope, your not alone. I hunt with my 6 & 9 yr olds. I just know when I take them that we will probably not see much. It still requires me to have a TON of patience! One thing we all really enjoy is quail hunting, the boys do not have to sit still or be quiet. They get to stomp through the woods and are active with the hunt. I honestly enjoy that more than deer hunting with them at this point.
Everybody is STUPID at something!!

I understand what you mean man. I take my 4 year old little girl with me and it is....interesting. But, as many have said, they ain't gonna be young but just a little while..... Do you need me time? Sure. Is there gonna come a time where you would trade a whole whole lot to have them as kids in the woods with you again? Yes.
Suck it up and take them as much as you can stand it. Keep in mind this isn't coming from an older person...I'm 31. I just can already see how fast they grow.
And hell, they are just deer anyway....
I've been pretty blessed in my hunting...killed some really really nice deer. Killed a really nice deer this year....but what sticks out more in my mind?
My daughter sitting on my lap watching deer in a greenfield as the sun behind the pines....
Me carrying a Coleman heater, a backpack with enough food to feed a Rewandan refugee camp, iPad, wifi, headphones, Minnie Mouse, little gloves, her little binocs (she decided she like Daddy's better....), little toboggan, 10 handwarmers, enough lights to play football in a cave (she not a fan of the dark), and of course a little green potty...and a 34lb 4 year old...
The damn dumbest thing I took? A rifle. Won't make that mistake again...
