Just curious for future reference when I get back in a club. I shot him yesterday because I was hunting a little piece of TVA land I never hunt and needed some more meat. He's barely a six (left side has a really short crab claw point at the end). His body was pretty big though. I had a doe run in on top of me breathing pretty hard. You could see her breath. She stood there for 5 minutes or so then blew out the way she came. I knew a buck was chasing her. A couple minutes later this guy came in on her same path, nose to the ground, and grunting like crazy. He stoppped right at my tinks scent wick I hung in a tree. It was pretty exciting for me because that's the first one I have ever shot chasing.

No would not cull a 6pt unless he was over 200#s

I don't go along with the "cull" way of thinking. You wont/can't sway genetics in free ranging deer, along with 50 other factors.

Most of the places I hunt...he gets a pass..
Kinda hard to judge him laying in your treestand as far as age...
But if he 'floats your boat' CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
Sometimes we make deer hunting miserable based on an age or score...

You do lose man points in an Acura

Pull the jaw bone and figure out his age.

Lol. Thanks. I had to sell my truck because of a recent divorce and increased commute. I couldn't afford the 12mpg in my truck. I will be getting another one soon though.

If you "needed more meat", why didn't you shoot the doe?

She probably would have been better eating. "Cull" is just an excuse to shoot something. I wouldn't shoot a buck I wasn't going to mount.

You can't affect genetics by shooting deer in a free ranging herd, therefore "culling" is an impossible task.

If you were happy with the buck and shot him, wonderful. No need to bring culling into the conversation. It was public land and he was a legal buck. Asking other people what they would have done may not always get you the answers you're hoping for.

You can't shoot does on TVA land outside outside of the doe season - which yesterday was. I probably should have been more clear. I am happy with him because he was legal and translates into more meat. My cull question was to get opinions as to whether or not the buck might be a cull in managed clubs. I realize its somehwat senseless to cull bucks on public land. Thanks for the replies....

As far I'm concerned as long as you're happy with him, go for it. Many people claim to be trophy hunters and then justify shooting young deer by calling em culls.

Whoops. Didn't know about doe limitations on TVA land. Please ignore my previous response. Cull as a term just kind of irks me. The people who think they are somehow helping their deer herd that way are misguided IMHO. If they would feed protein through the antler growing season (April through August) and plant summer plots they could see real visible gains. Very few want to do that though. We have tried 3 summers running to plant iron clay peas on our place and they just get wiped out. We may try some protein feeders this year. Good luck the rest of the year to you. Be glad you could afford the Acura after the divorce. What's the old saying, "Why are divorces so expensive? Because they're worth it!"

Thats right. It's paid for - plus a 2004 Acura with 170k miles isn't worth very much compared to truck resale values.

Thats right! I would haul a 12ptr on top of a Mini Cooper if I had to. I'm secure enough in my manhood to drive an old POS Acura. I'm lucky it's 4wd. It just goes to show that some do drive trucks to make up for penis size! Jk and giving it back...

Let me tell you something about that acura. As long as the frame don't bottom out it will follow a stock truck anywhere. We go to south Dakota or Kansas every year pheasant hunting. As you know the roads are about all dirt and turn to slop after a freeze. My dad's acura split a Chevy 4x4 and a Ford 4x4 that were in opposite ditches. Before he hit it I said you are not going through that. Proved me wrong. They are all wheel drive.He has had 3 different ones since we have been going and all performed great. It may be the redneck driver that makes northern folks look bad.

Amen to that--I used a hitch-haul on a Saturn wagon when my truck expired one year--wife was pissed when an antler vibrated a nasty mark on the hatchback!!
My next door neighbor in Oregon bowhunts elk in public land that is gated off to motorized vehicles in hunting season. He and his buddies all have bicycles rigged to tow carts. They pedal in, set up a base camp, and use the carts to take the meat back to the truck at the gate.

I would not have culled it for management purposes but I WOULD have shot the piss out of it if I was looking for meat or just to put him on the ground if thats what it was that I wanted to do.
