Talltines,
Too many people depend on enforcement officers to explain the law to them. Enforcement officers interpret our constitutions and laws to suit their purposes, not ours.
I try to back up what I say with information that is available to all about what our constitutions and laws actually say and what our courts have ruled.
That seems to annoy a few people here who are very quick to spout off at the mouth but have nothing to back up what they say.
True that. Don't know about you But I am and always will be Pro law enforcement. My dad was a cop for 30 years and yes I'm sure he bent some laws but I know he saved a lot of lives also. People hate them until they need them.

Phil Miller transferred to the enforcement division two or three years ago too. He was the supervising biologist at Mulberry Fork and he also managed our DMAP program on our lease. It seems like the main function of the DCNR is law enforcement instead of protecting our wildlife. Browse through the rules and see how many have more to do with managing people than they have to do with conservation of wildlife.

I wondered if he was actually going to do that. I wonder who will finish some of the conception date studies in Chambers.

eddie, you really need to work on your meds.....
if one dosen't protect wildlife by enforcing laws/regs I guess you do it by praying for the poachers and violators to quit??
if you don' think protecting wildlife and habitat is about managing people then you are way out there in lala land....
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

There are probably more people rules than wildlife rules because the DCNR is more than wildlife conservation.
Also, wildlife can't read, so it wouldn't make much sense to write rules for them to abide by.

no, not no, hell no. This would be a monumental mistake. I imagine that is the same reaction of nearly everyone at the DCNR. There are some game wardens for it. Some retired and some current. 74% of COs to be exact. The Alabama CO association conducted a poll and got 74% FOR statewide. Like coffee said one aspect is the streamlining of government. Other states do it, Alabama won't be the first. Pretty sure the officers would rather have someone from a law enforcement background, rather than a biologist as a director. I think they are the second largest law enforcement group in the state. The department has morphed into a biologist for everything. It's not going to mean Troopers have powers GWs have. The "customers" (hunters, fishermen, landowners etc.) will never know there has been a change.

2dogs gonna have to disagree a little, First off , moving game wardens to DPS does not get rid of commissioner, director, etc or their powers to promulgate rules regulations. All it does is take the the folks who enforce the law and removes them from the folks who make the conservation policy. If you think that's a good idea, that's fine, but I don't know how that works well, thats just adding another piece of beauracracy to the mix.,The 74 percent quote,,If I told you stay here lose your enforcement powers and never get a raise,or go there and get that, how you gonna vote.

Also, Customers, just a thought ,there lots of hunters have the home number, linc number to GWs, who have personal relationship with their local GW, how many can call a trooper at home or have that personal relationship. Some, Im sure but not near as many can go to the local GW. Are the customers still going to have that when the GWs work for the Troopers, thats who will be telling them what to do how to act and what the priority is. If you believe the priority will be Hunting, fishing or public safety, up to you to decide.

actually I heard it was more like 80% in favor.
The Dept had a chance just before I hired on in 1980 to go to the trooper retirement system and didn't do it. The troopers pay a little more in each check but get a whole lot more back at retirement, and at 20 instead of 25 years. Much better deal.
It's all about the money, either at retirement, while working, or better chances at promotion, FOR THE OFFICERS. Do YOU think you would vote for a perceived smaller amount of money?
It has nothing to do with bettering the workings of the DCNR, better management of the game, or better serving the hunters of Alabama, all of which I think will decline.
If this change takes place I will bet it will be the biggest clusterscrew in Alabama hunting history. Write down that I said it here and now....

If folks read the bill there is no more trooper retirement, not even new trooper hires get what current troopers have.Current CEOs are on the same scale now as current rd troopers, the discrepancy in pay is at the rank structure, what this vote was about is a power struggle amongst different forces, nothing more nothing less. When the poll was taken ,the question was asked in a way to get the response that was wanted by the Poll taker. Large campaign was waged.Hunters need to investigate noit assume. Lets do whats best for hunters and the state not what some individuals think is best for them.

I don't doubt that you have taken more meds in a year than I've taken all my life. Get used to the fact that not everyone agrees with your opinions all the time.

One thing that I have seen over the years is a change in DCNR hirings of men to be officers. When I hired in 1980 I had all my life wanted to be a GAME WARDEN in Alabama. Most of the folks I hired on with felt the same way. Most, not all, some were looking at the retirement, some retired from other jobs and got on here, military and LEO jobs. The good ones had a LOT of experience hunting and fishing.
Towards the end of my career I noticed the Dept hired a lot of folks that had little, hell even no experience in the outdoors. Couldn't tell a bass from a catfish. They were looking for a state job, just happened to be a GW job. You cannot teach a non hunter how to catch real outlaws, it won't happen. He can write tickets for no plug on a dove field but the real outlaws laugh at the thought of him catching them. If the real every day outlaw dosen't think about the local GW every day then that GW isn't doing his job. Or can't do it.
Don't think I am saying there aren't good ones hired today, just not as many as years ago. Too much emphasis on non enforcement crap these days.
Like the Dept hiring biologists to fill Enforcement Officer positions (2 per county) , who do you think is gettting shorted here?? Sure as hell isn't the Biology end of things. Instead of a full time Enforcement Officer you now get a part time Officer.
And I'm not anti biologists either, just pro enforcement. Jeff Makemson and Matt Brock are as good a men as anyone could hire and I'd stand beside them any day.
rant over, resume yer regular viewing....

Good points , from a man that's been there and seen many changes over the years. I've known and know some mighty fine COs and none hade degrees of any kind. There is a move in the country to make everyone mulicraft, I see it in my weork and I'm sure others as well. I'm not anti biologist at all, I bet most biologist wanta do what the are trained for and let enfocement do what they are trained for. Don't know the other fellow you mentioned but I can speak to Matt Brock, who is first class all the way, met him in person last year and we've all seen his post on here. This state is lucky to have him.

Poachers, game law violators, treestand thieves, trail camera thieves, all need to be whipped with a saw briar bundle tied together with razor wire. We all are affected by these sorry individuals more than the DCNR and Game Wardens.

....The 74 percent quote,,If I told you stay here lose your enforcement powers and never get a raise,or go there and get that, how you gonna vote. I thought all GW were hired in as lieutenants? If they go into DPS, I would assume that they would hired in as troopers like the rest and spend most/all of their career working up to lieutenant. Are the base pay scales that much higher in DPS? I guess the ones already on the job would have more opportunity to make captain but what about new hires? Maybe they reclass existing GW's as troopers/corporals/sergeants? No need for all them lieutenants in DPS. I realize that GW is kind of a dead end job. I was told that very clearly 28 years ago when I was considering going that route but GW's better be careful what they ask for in this situation. They just might get it.

NO GWs are hired on as Lts, jus as officers. There is no corporal rank, just Sgt, Lt, and Capt. You and I have no idea just HOW a transition as to rank would be made and neither do those wanting this change. They just see the change.
I think the problem here is that the field officers are tired of Montgomerys crap and will take any other option than continueing with the status quo. The DPS options is different and therefore looks inviting to dissatisfied officers.
the other side of the fence is always greener....and sometimes a FUBAR in disguise.
I will say that, in MY experience, Montgomery office has done very little to make life better for the officers over the years. Promise this, promise that....deliver very little. This "change" is the result.
