One thing that I have seen over the years is a change in DCNR hirings of men to be officers. When I hired in 1980 I had all my life wanted to be a GAME WARDEN in Alabama. Most of the folks I hired on with felt the same way. Most, not all, some were looking at the retirement, some retired from other jobs and got on here, military and LEO jobs. The good ones had a LOT of experience hunting and fishing.

Towards the end of my career I noticed the Dept hired a lot of folks that had little, hell even no experience in the outdoors. Couldn't tell a bass from a catfish. They were looking for a state job, just happened to be a GW job. You cannot teach a non hunter how to catch real outlaws, it won't happen. He can write tickets for no plug on a dove field but the real outlaws laugh at the thought of him catching them. If the real every day outlaw dosen't think about the local GW every day then that GW isn't doing his job. Or can't do it.

Don't think I am saying there aren't good ones hired today, just not as many as years ago. Too much emphasis on non enforcement crap these days.

Like the Dept hiring biologists to fill Enforcement Officer positions (2 per county) , who do you think is gettting shorted here?? Sure as hell isn't the Biology end of things. Instead of a full time Enforcement Officer you now get a part time Officer.

And I'm not anti biologists either, just pro enforcement. Jeff Makemson and Matt Brock are as good a men as anyone could hire and I'd stand beside them any day.
