Hey guys, new here to the site. Been lurking for awhile and decided to join. I have a question about the youth hunts a Fred Stimpson. Has anyone every been hunting there before with their kids? My son was selected today to make the hunt on the 20th. I was wondering what to expect when I get there? What are some hotels in the area? I am hoping he can close the deal with his 1st deer. He missed a big doe last year and his older sister got an 8pt and his younger sister killed a doe. Its been eating at him all year.

My inlaws live 20 mins from there and I scouted it out at Thanksgiving. They had a youth hunt the follwing day. There was a decent crowd but they did kill several deer. From what I could tell you the southern end of the Mgt area is higher ground with a ton of cutover. The northern part is more river bottom. With all of the rain we have had I am sure the river will be up and access to those areas may be limited. There is some really good looking property down there. Just riding around near sunset we saw 15 deer in food plots.

In Jackson there is a new Hampton Inn by Walmart and a Best Western less than a mile away. Both are within a 20 min drive to the WMA.

Thanks for the info. I have a family camp in Thomasville from an older hunting club we use to have before the mill took our land. I may try to stay there. Looking on the maps it wouldn't be more than 30 minute drive from what I see. I hope he is able to hunt being we are number 58 and if the water is high they only take the 1st 35.

theres a hampton in on the north side of jackson that is very reasonably priced and the closest place you will find.

Get on the hallow field food plot it's marked on the map. My son took his first deer there on November 30 hunt. When we drove up to the plot there was a decent 8 point in it. You will have to get there early for a food plot though. We went there last year too and seen over 20 deer. Last year we seen deer at a road that is called three point road. There is 3 plots there and we seen deer in them at lunchtime. At lunchtime last year we drove up and down the roads by the greenfields and we seen several deer in them. At one field my son got out of the truck and walked up to two does and they just looked at him like he was gonna feed them and then he missed them and they just slowly walked off the greenfield. I hope you have the same luck we did.

Thanks for the info guys. Is it someplace you have to let the game wardens know where you are hunting or just a 1st come 1st serve area for the kids?

Have orange hat, vest and pants if possible.

Is it Hollow field or Howell? I see a big field on the northern middle called Plot 5 Howell Field. Are all the roads going to be opened up for driving in or you have to walk in from the gates. I know I'm asking alot, I just want to make sure my son has the best chance at getting a deer. It's going to be a far drive for me for a 1 day hunt but from the sounds of it may be worth it.

Howell sorry it's big and they came out of the holler at the back of the field. If you look on map their is a side road that goes to another field I believe and that's where they came from. All the roads are opened. They are not scared of vehicles either cause the one my son shot walked right past the truck into the field. You will have a lot of traffic coming past the food plots but as said they don't seem to be scared of vehicles

If you have a ground blind it would be great cause there is tall weeds on the side of the planted field so you could brush the blind in. We tucked our blind in the weeds halfway between both ends of the field. When on the field you can see about 200 yards so a tripod would be good. Get there way earlier though cause if not the spots will be taken.

Yeah, I have a ground blind and shooting sticks. I plan on getting there early and in line waiting an hour or so before. Is that early enough or would i have to get there before that?

Should be early enough. If you look at pic to the right is a grown up field that you can see about 200 yards this is where the doe came from my son shot. The 8 point came from the left of the pic where you can see about 100 yards. If you look you can see white belly which is the dead doe she came from the right of the pic and it was a 40 yard shot.

Is most of the hunting from ground blinds? Not sure how else you would work it.

But, unless there are some radical changes, the water will be up and the numbers cut on the Jan hunt.
If not, it will be highly unusual for that time of year!

I hunt real close to there and live on the South end of Thomasville. You need to allow at least 45 minutes to drive from Hardees in Thomasville to the Stimpson Sign-in point.
