How's the recoil compared to a .30-06 165 gr round?

If recoil is an issue then a 45-70 might not be a fit.

Not really an issue, just curious as to how it compares. Chuck Hawks' table says it's about the same, but I was wondering if any of you guys had personal experience.

Got a marlin 45-70 myself. Great gun. Kills on one end and cripples on the other. But I'm shooting reloads. Good bit hotter than factory bullets.

The Marlin 1895 was not bad, but it definitely kicked more than my .308 with 165 loads when I loaded them hot. I settled on 300 gr JHP at 1785 fps which are about the same as factory 300 gr loads. If you can handle the '06, you'd be OK with it.

I killed several deer with my Marlin 45-70 and I'd still be enjoying it today, if some POS didn't steal it, down in Camden, a few years ago.
I hate making a good first impression. There’s no way I can keep that shit up.

Fullhouse handloads~ 405 grainer at 2200 fps..... really gets your attention

Great round, I shoot a 1895ss marlin and love it. Nearest I can compare it to would be a single shot 12ga shooting a 3" buckshot. Shooting at deer you won't notice it, however it's not something you will want to target shoot with. It does it's job well, if you hit it you get it. I prefer the Winchester 300 gr solid rounds . They're around 1800fps.

I have one and love it. i just ordered a scout rail and have the burris scout scope I'm going to slap on it. It's the shorter SS marlin. It's my thick brush/rain gun. I shot a 150lb doe with it this past season, turned every bone/muscle in the neck to pure jello.
I used to be a lifeguard, but some blue kid got me fired.

300 gr is wrong that deer wont think bout nothing if you hit with a 45/70. I love mine. In fact 300 gr shot mine first then went straight to store the same day and bought him one. As far as recoil, it aint bout nothing. You will love one cause brush and limbs are no concern.
