Great Pyrenees. One of the most protective breeds there is. My neighbor's Pyrenees must be an exception. He is the dumbest, car chasing, scared of his own shadow mongrel I've ever ran across.

Every one I have been around was like that. May act different with live stock. Big dogs for sure. May be all it take to per sway some thief to stay away

Just get yourself 3 or 4 Guineas and save money on an alarm. Nothing will come into the yard without noise that'll wake up the dead and they'll keep the grubs outta the lawn!!

Boxers. They also make great family pets. x2 I have two boxers. Well, technically 1 1/2. One we kept from the first litter the female had. His father was half pit and husky. But he looks like a brown boxer. Anyways, the point is they are big ol lap dogs to the family, wary of our friends until the dogs get to know them (usually takes three or four visits). And strangers get the growls and warning treatment. I always know when someone pulls up to the house. Heck they even threaten my vehicles until we poke our heads out. Then they turn into big dumb ol dogs.

German Shepherd - they do a good job protecting, plus they have the intimidation factor when they are seen.
I hate thieves as much as the next guy - maybe the police will catch them. Warn your neighbors...

Black Mouth Cur-Alabama Red
bred to fight cougars. very loyal and good with kids but heaven help a thief, a democrat or a homo...they dont take kindly to strangers and are easily trained to attack. I have one about 8 months old now- weighs 40 lbs already and doesnt know his own strength. trees squirrels in the backyard and already ate one!
Google Alabama Black Mouth Cur- excellent breeders in mobile/washington county. In fact the breeder in Washington County is credited with creating the "Alabama Red". (before I get attacked let me say that the "red" strain of Black Mouth Cur was actually developed by the Howard family of Texas and the Howard Family set up the Alabama BMC folks in Washington County)-

I had a German Shepherd as a boy, that was trained as USAF Security dog, but she was a long haired..way to much hair for Viet Nam, my Mom worked as a civilian at Wright Patterson AFB with the Security Police, so we wound up with her...Dobie went about 100# in her prime...she knew when things were serious and when they werent...smarter than most people I grew up with...words "Dobie...get'em"...she'd grab an arm...more you struggled the harder she bit....like having your forearm in a vice...

Very strange that the guy would knock on the door then just walk away to loot the shop when no one answered. I would have thought he would have kicked the door in too. If he isn't going to kick the door in, why risk bringing attention to himself? Why not just go loot the shop without knocking? Of course I know when dealing with thugs like that you aren't dealing with the highest level of intelligence.

I have a German Shepherd and she is just what I wanted and needed. However, I have put in a lot and I mean a lot of time with this dog. A dog of this nature has to be voice controlled or you will have problems, maybe even legal problems when it bites someone. If you and the family are not willing to put in the training time, do not get a German Shepherd.
