That's kinda what I figured, when you mentioned Montana. A climber, shooting house, ground blind(store bought or home made), or a ladder will give you an edge. It won't be as exciting as you are use to, but it works.
As for standoff, it depends on your area. As you mentioned, things are pretty thick here. The brush may dictate that for you. I've sat places that I can't see past 30 yards and I've sat places I could see several hundred yards. The more cover you have around you, the better. I'll quit rambling now.
