I have a GSP and we hunt quail together. She has a GPS collar and ranges looking for birds. We hunt WMA's and Preserves. I am a responsible dog owner, take every effort to monitor her whereabouts. If someone shot her because she ran by them there will be hell to pay. I don't give a d@mn if its my property, governors property or the presidents property. what shooters said is right. You dont give a dang if your dogs is OFF property you can hunt! KEEP you dang mutt off other peoples land. That is the BIG MAIN problem. You just think it is OK for YOUR dog to run around RUINING other peoples enjoyment of THEIR property...which they pay mortgages , taxes, improvements, planting food plots, maintaining...and GUESS WHAT??? IT IS NOT OK! its your IRRESPONSIBILITY thats gets you dang dog shot. IT IS YOUR FAULT! The gall of some peoples thinking. You blame the LANDOWNER for YOUR irresponsible action! letting you dang dog run around like THEIR property is YOUR DOGS park. You MONITOR you dogs whereabouts on other peoples property? I mean freakin really??? And youre going to show up ON their property and start trouble over your dog? not only will you be trespassing..Criminally trespassing and hunting without permission if you have your gun....but youd be threatening a man on their own property! you think thats gonna work out well for you? Some ole boys might not take lightly to that...

What if you don't know the owner and have no idea how to figure it out, and it's a continual problem. You still say someone on property they own or lease must just grin and bear it? Your combative attitude is one reason I would be hesitant to attempt to catch a dog, and go around trying up figure out its owner. There's a distinct possibility the owner is some crazy redneck with a chip on thier shoulder who "don't give a damn" about the effect thier stupid dog has on your life.

Thats why i'll never try to catch another dog. Knew the dog and had done nothing more than get out of my car. Lab...with owner present. Yall can catch all the unknown dogs you want. Not I.
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Just look at some of the posts and complaining about people legally hunting squirrels, birds, etc on WMAs and other Public Land!!!! And what the heck difference does it make how much money you pay and how much you enjoy QDMA? Does that mean the guy that just gets permission to hunt a small plot for free and shoots the 1st legal deer he sees for fun and venison has less Rights than people who pay more, or have more? This is a problem that is only getting worse. People who think THEIR Rights are more important than the Rights of others!!

Ok, here's a real life scenario. I live in the country and my son has a beagle that we keep up 100% of the time. Some new guys bought the land right behind me to hunt on ( why, I dont know). Say we are out feeding the beagle and he gets out of the pen and plays around the yard with my son. Then, he does what beagles do and walks to the woods behind the house and steps 20 yards onto their property. If it was your property you had just bought without knowing anyone around it, would you shoot the dog? This is what I fear most about my son having a dog right now, the new landowners know nothing about our area and every direction they shoot will be in the direction of someones home (within 1/10th of a mile). Just seems like a problem waiting to happen. If it does, is there anyone on here willing to pay my bail money

There may have been some misunderstanding in my post. I have my own property that I hunt deer on. I quail hunt off of my property simply because we have no birds. I run my dog on quail preserves and WMA's. IF my dog was shot on one of those scenarios, I would not care who owned the land. That said with my land if I see a dog I try to locate the owner. If I see I cow, I find the farmer and help him get the cow back in and mend the fence so it won't get back out. Honestly, how many times has your hunt been ruined by a dog? ZERO for me.

several times. usually most people just sigh and let it go, but dogs that are repeat offenders usually get shot. as i have said many times before may people WILL NOT tolerate dogs running around on their lease or property.

I fully agree that there are situations with recurring and obscene instances of dogs being allowed to roam free and that it is a problem.
It is the 'shoot em all' attitude that really irks me!

me too. my daughter had a beagle that i know a new neighbor shot, a while back. but to be fair the puppy drugg up other peoples things in ower yard. i told my daughter what could happen, and it did. was i mad hell yes, but the simple fact remains its just an animal. if i had gone up the rode and said something look what could happen, tresspassing, assualt, or worse someone gets killed over a dog. dogs get on other people property and get shot, thats just the way it is. you just have to except it and go on. i have friends that have large tracts of land that shoot dogs on sight, that their choice and both party dog owners and dog shooters will have to live with actions.

I can imagine that a dog running on your land could be bad for a hunt. I can't imagine, however, that a dead dog laying in the woods following a boom from a 7Mag would be much better.

Your last quote is very telling and it's probable that you'll never understand the guy who continually faces this problem on his own property. Years ago, I hunted an area of a county where people continually threw out stray pups. If left alone, a stray would eventually pack up with another stray and they would pack up with another stray, etc. On a regular basis, we'd see 3-4 dogs chasing deer, rabbit, and anything else that presented a meal to them. On top of that, a neighbor who owned five acres of land next to our 150 acres had his own pack of dogs that he allowed to roam anywhere - and some would be vicious. Given that environment I wonder how some of our "it's wrong to shoot dogs" folks would react.

me and a buddy where just talking about this. he has cows, he once told me that a dog would be better of going to michael vicks house to live than chasing his cattle. thought that was extremly funny! but some people just dont understand that you have to be responsible for you pets actions or SOMEONE will shoot it. people that act like there pets are just like there childern never seam to get this.

Depends on situation. Had a guy call me some time back and told me his pitbull would growl amd pop its teeth at you. He said to tell my kids if it came to our house and did such to holler at it and stomp their and it would run off. BULLCHIT!!!!! I told him i would shoot it in the road if walked by my house. He got rid of it. We are friends now hes a good man but thats peoples mentality.

I never said he would be hunting someone elses property either But for his dog to get shot it would be HUNTING quail on someones elses property. And for HIM to go over there with a FIREARM in his possession the CHARGE would be hunting without permission..as being on someone elses property with a firearm carries that charge. I could care less about people hunting squirrels rabbits quail or bigfoot on WMAs or other property they have PERMISSION to be on..I just think for people to complain when their DOGS are on others property ids the problem. I think ALL OF OUR RIGHTS are equally important...my right is to the enjoyment of MY property. His and his dogs is to HIS property..NOT MINE!

Rick, i completely understand what your saying, and i am in total agreement. Besides, the dogs i'm talking about are the ones with no collar, just dogs.

If your going to have a dog, take responsibility for it. Or get rid of it.
I got one now that walks from down the road to take a dump in my front yard. I don't know who's it is. I've tried to run it off several times. But it still comes back. There was a nice warm pile on the driveway (concrete) by the garage the other morning. That's always nice to see when your heading out to work. And my dog...which is on an electric fence...just sits there and watches it.
I've about had it with the irresponsible pet owner down the road.
