I have two dogs which im fond of, a bloodhound and a blue heeler. I keep them up, but ones i had in the past that run loose, i told my nabors if they came on their property and was a nusance to killem and call me and i would haul them off after shaking their hand. The nabors told me the same in return. I love where i live and my nabors, its ashame it aint like that everwhere.

I agree with that shootnmiss. That is the way it should be no matter if it's a kids pet or not. I explained to my kids when they were young that if our pet dog ran off then it could be shot by the neighbors so we must keep it home and train it and take care of it. I have the same agreement with my neighbors and they with me and we get along good and always will I'm sure. I would not get mad at them for shooting my dog if it was roaming around. I would not attempt to whoop their butt nor call the law like some I read on here say they would. Dogs should not roam around.

I usually don't get in these pissing matches, but unfortunately I down have, So all my hunting dogs stay in pens year around except when they are being hunted. I lost a fine rabbit dog, because a guy thought it was spooking his deer when he dug out of the pen. All he had to do was call the number on the collar. My black lab runs loose and stays on my property. I understand when every time i turn my dogs loose I am running a chance of them being shot or run over, but dang man, most collars have names on them just call the number and the people will come get the dog. Now If its the same ole dog club screwing you up, yea I see the frustration, BUT I swear it like when rifle season comes in, people don't think your allowed to run rabbit dogs.

WHY does all dog hunters get put in the same class of people? Take me I bow hunt, still hunt with a rifle, rabbit hunt with beagles, and deer hunt with basset hounds, jack russels, and bigger dogs also, but that don't make me scum. The guys that I dog hunt deer with we all do everything we can do to keep dogs on our 1200 acres that we hunt on. I am done with this thread but I guess all I can say, What you do today, you have to sleep with tonight, so if y'all happy with it I am happy with it. smile

I don't think of this as a pissing match because I'm trying to figure people out and why they think the way they do. I have never shot anyone's rabbit dog because I see the collar and at least these people are trying to take care of the dogs. That's not the kind of dog I would shoot. It's the roaming type. The dog I would probablly have a problem with is your black lab because I've seen this type dog running around barking and barking all day long roaming around chasing and harrassing everything around. Not saying yours does this but I've seen em 100's of times.

If your neighbor has livestock, and they get out of the fence and come over on your land......hunting or not. Do you shoot it. A few cows could mess up your hunt. Gonna kill them?

I wouldn't shoot a dog unless I thought it was going to harm me.

Not at all, but if those cows are messing up my stuff day after day for long enough, at some point I'm going to be eating steak.

Same deal with dogs. A man shouldn't shoot a dog the first time he sees it or if it has a name collar call the guy but if it becomes a problem and there seems to be no other way to deal with it, a bullet is highly likely and IMHO justified.

Just to clarify, running across my property aint enough for me to shoot a dog. Killing my chickens, goats, pigs, or such, well thats a whole new ballgame. If they got collars I will call the owner first, if it continues....read between the lines. I dont get off on killing a dog just to to be doing it. Carry on

But you honestly think it is ok for your dog to run over someone elses PROPERTY??

ruining their property and their hunting experience for which they are PAYING A LOT of money and doing A LOT of work?

Possibly running down and killing fawns on it???

honestly???
That is OK with you??

Respect is a two way street...you have to give it to get it! you want people to RESPECT your property...your dog... if you can consider that property.

while you DISRESPECT THEIRS?? their actual PROPERTY?? For which they pay ALOT more money then your dog cost????

Not making too much sense to me with that argument...sorry.

Where did I say it was OK for my dog to run over someone's property???

What are you talking about? I"m not justifying it. I'm saying I have more important things to consider than my own needs and wants. I am putting others first. I talking about my neighbors dogs on my property and how I feel about it.

Well youre more patient then I am. Like I said..I DO NOT kill them..but I CANT STAND IT. It really pisses me off and ruins my hunting. I find it VERY disrespectful.

Cletus - About the time I think we're all seeing eye to eye on this dog issue somebody goes and says something like this. Do you think your neighbor really lets his cows roam around on purpose? I had a goat a couple years ago that roamed around when it got out and ended up at my good neighbors house. He called and said it was eating his wifes flowers she planted. Once a goat starts it's hard to break it much like a dog. I asked him if he wanted to shoot it or if he wanted me to. I ended up penning it up to sell. I liked this goat and it was like a family pet but my neighbor is much more important than the goat or the dog and the animal crossed the line by repeatedly getting out and roaming around.
Isn't this how roaming dogs should be handled?

Let me clarify where i stand on this. I don't mind hunting dogs, occasionally getting over on me, thats going to happen. I used to have beagles, and it's hard, when they are running a rabbit to keep them from crossing the line. I know what they are doing, its the damn yard dogs that come over there every day. What are they doing? They don't even know what their doing. If they have a collar and look like a hunting dog, then i'll try and locate the owner. Nobody runs deer dogs anywhere around me, so thats not a problem. The occasional beagle, that would get a pass. I know their owner is close, and probably looking for him, the yard dog owner, doesn't give a rat's a** where his dog is.

I have a GSP and we hunt quail together. She has a GPS collar and ranges looking for birds. We hunt WMA's and Preserves. I am a responsible dog owner, take every effort to monitor her whereabouts. If someone shot her because she ran by them there will be hell to pay. I don't give a d@mn if its my property, governors property or the presidents property.

thats the problem right their. you dont give a damn. i understand you love your dog, and personal i wouldnt never shot a dog with a gps tracking device. But guess what there are people that would because you dont give a damn about your dog being on their propertry. well they dont give a damn about shooting your dog. this is why i quit dog hunting in the early 90s. i have witness dog hunters and non doghunters have a fist fight and in the end a women pulled out a gun to protect her dogrunning son. this was a bad case and someone could have gotten killed. i never dog hunted again aftwer that. some people love their aniamls i get that. but it just an aniaml people forget this sometimes. i will damned if im going to jail over a shootout over a stuipid aniamal. like i said people love their aniamls i get it, but their NOT more important than human life.
