I guess this is to Mr. coldtrail - You are describing a perfect world which we do not live in. There are so many loose dogs running around where I live you could not possibly know who they belonged to. Plus people turn out so many unwanted dogs that become feral it is dangerous to let them run wild. These feral dogs are already known to cross with coyotes and they become a coy dog which is much worse than a coyote. It's obvious to me that people are not going to be responsible for their dogs. Sure some people do but very few any more and what is responsible to one person is not to another evident by reading this post. Some think it's ok to let them run loose while others see it as a threat. So the obvious answer to me is if you want your dog to be safe don't let them run loose else he may get it. And another thing is good dogs become bad dogs when they get around other dogs and the pack instinct takes over. So I don't think a neighbor should be willing to fight their neighbor because they shot a roaming dog. It should be understood between neighbors and respected.

I'll explain it to ya, like this. If you love your dog, keep him on YOUR LAND! I got rid of my rabbit dogs 2 years ago. I loved my dogs, not yours. You have every right to own a dog, just keep him off my property. I have the right to not have a dog. Pet owners like you make me sick. They move to the country, they turn their dogs loose and don't care where they go, and what they do. Every day your pet makes his rounds, sometimes he'll pick up a buddy or two along the way. I've seen them cover several miles in a day. All they do is cover every inch of a place, looking for something to get into. I'd rather have deer dogs on my place. They are looking for deer scent, when they find it, they'll chase it and be gone, not lingering for hours. By the time you get up, get you a cup of coffee and walk out onto the porch, there's ole' scruffy under the truck. You look at him and say, man what lazy dog. Not realizing he's been off ruining someone's hunt somewhere. My neighbor where i live has finally come to an understanding. Keep his dog the hell off my property, and i won't trap him in steel traps. Once he found out that i had steel traps on my property, then he put in a underground wire fence. Owning a pet, takes responsibility, just like having kids. The ones who don't take responsibility, need to be held accountable. Really aggravates me, when i hear people say i own 40 acres and i'm not going to keep my dog in a fence. Ok, then get rid of the damn dog! Sorry guys, but this struck a cord with me. This same neighbor has 40 acres. I asked him, why dont you put them in the pasture with your horses? He said, well i don't want them to chase them around.Really? What about the game on my property, i don't want them chasing it around either.

you have no room to complain should your animals get shot or killed by other means while not on your property. That is life.

You cannot use your property to injure or limit the use and enjoyment of property owned by others not yourself. That is the old English Common Law and underpins all U.S. property law today.

I have had issues similar in the past. While trapping coyotes some years back, a neighbor's bird dogs and labs didnt fare so well in my Duke traps. I had told the neighbor I was trapping and I had told him all his dogs were on my game cams, and to please see to it they didnt come on my property from Sept1 - Feb 1 as I was preparing then hunting deer, squirrel etc...

Tried to be civil as could be. You cant be careless with your property by allowing your property to injury or limit my use and enjoyment of my private property.

yes , but most people simply do not care. most simply look at it like its my lease or my property so if your dog is on my land i have the right to shoot it. sure it illegal, but so is going 56 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Typical spoiled americans. Pet owners think they can let their dogs run free, because they want to. It's simple, pet owners don't care if their dogs get onto someone else's property, and then when something happens, they act like they lost a family memeber. Here's another idea, they won't get run over, if you keep them out of the freaking road. Love the people who have dogs that chase every car that comes by, and freak out when someone runs over their pet. I know someone who buys their dog food out of the refrigeration section at some grocery store. It supposed to have the finest ingredients for the family pet. This same person, then stops and buys Mcdonalds on thier way home to feed the family. How stupid is that!

Yes I do ! But it's me and one other guy. If it's not at least a 3-1/2 year old deer 8 point or better , wider than the ears , we let them walk. No clubs around us , bordered by river on one side. It's PRIME. Ag fields , a little cut over. Virgin hardwood. The landowner does all the planting , year round road maintenance. In the off season he plants our plots in whatever we want. Zero work days. And he supplies us a nice house to stay in !!! So to me, it's worth every dime.

you can complain but you have no remedy. You can complain to anyone who will listen, but you fail to state a claim, legally. I suppose you could tell it to a judge in small claims court but you would look like panty waiste PETA person.

But if your dog is on my property and even if I do not warn you, I can and will kill it, particularly if it is interested in deer, quail, any game animals. As a general rule I warn first, however... good neighbor policy...

That is also biblical, which is always best way to handle anything.

if thy brother trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone

I work my tail off all year long on my place to have a great place for me and my kids to hunt. Several dog hunters who live a mile away let their dogs run free 365. It burns me up to walk 15 mins way before daylight in the freezing cold and then 1 hour later here comes one running a doe just about to death. I SHOOT THEM. If you care about and love your dogs like you say you do keep them shut up during hunting season at the very least. I do not pour money and time into this land for these mutts to exercise on. And by the way these dog hunters dont have enough land for a cow pasture let alone big enough to hunt with dogs.

You didn't do anything wrong. I get mad at some of these threads because my neighbors dogs cause me problems. I often threaten to shoot them but haven't yet. I would love to just talk to the neighbors and resolve the issue but their attitude is like the OP's.

I'm between a rock and a hard place. I hate to kill animals for just doing what animals do but I shouldn't have to put up with endless aggravation either.

To Mr. Coldtrail - What is wrong with shooting a dog? I'm not talking about indiscriminate killing of dogs. I agree with you and the bible and you should tell your neighbor if you have a gripe with them so you can try to resolve the issue and I have done that many many times about roaming dogs. Matter of fact I'm sure anyone within 1 mile of my place knows I shoot roaming dogs. But I'd really like to know what people see wrong with shooting a dog. I butcher my own hogs and I shoot them. I butcher my own chickens and I shoot them. The butcher shoots hogs. People shoot deer, squirrels, rabbits, goats and on and on. Whats the difference and why has it become something that is now wrong to do.

Do you butcher your neighbors chickens, go get one of his hogs and butcher it???????

I've had to shoot dogs, I've put down quite a few of MY dogs for various reasons. I would not shoot anyone else dogs though unless it is a serious situation though. I had to shoot a doberman that came into the woods and attacked one of my coon dogs years ago.

You see It's not about the dog at all, its about the other person. A kids pet, there property. The person is more important than the animal.

A dog trespassing isn't serious to me, shooting a mans dog then covering it up without ever discussing the issue is a cowardly thing to do IMO. Those are the one's I talking about.

PROTECTING your livestock I understand, PROTECTING your family or other pets I agree.

Getting pissed off and shooting the neighbors dog for being a dog, I don't agree with. I don't think thats how God wants neighbors to treat one another. Thats my opinion, you have your's and thats OK.

I've met two kinds of people who shoot dogs. One will shoot a dog on sight just because it happens to be on his property and even seems to enjoy doing it.

The other kind are forced to shoot because neighbors refuse to take responsibility for their dogs which continually cause problems. I think the second kind are justified even without having to talk to the neighbors first, if he knows the neighbors have the attitude of the OP. There is no need to have to kill a dog and fight his owner after the fact, just because the owner has no consideration for anyone besides himself.

How do you know there attitude if you haven't talked to them? I don't know your beliefs.

I'm a Christian and I don't think killing someones dog, basically destroying taking there property is a very good testimony. They may need to hear about my savior and this could just open the door, it doesn't carry much weight if I just blew a crater in their kid's pet.

If it is the kids pet they should care enough about it to keep it up and protected. Its not my kids pet I keep mine up. I give dogs multiple chances and take them back to the owner but after 2 or 3 chances it is yoyr responsibility to keep up with your dog not mine
