After everyone hitting on the subject I'm wanting to find some for my son to shoot instead of 20 gauge buckshot. Where can I find some in bham or the Montgomery I've never seen it. Thanks

If you need reduced recoil with a 243, you may want to wait a year or two to take him hunting. 243 has almost no recoil anyway.

I have seen it for 7mm-08 but I don't think I have ever seen it for .243.

Spend ~10 mins on these charts. Write down a few calibers, and recoil info. Compare the 20 gauge to different rifles. Keep in mind that a shotgun recoil is also faster than a rifle.

80 grain 243 Remington corelok doesn't really kick at all.. That's what my 7 year old shoots

Um. My sons Rossi single shot is so light it kicks harder than my sks and nearly as hard as my .270 abolt. I put the 20 gauge on the Rossi and put 3 inch turkey shot and it left a bruise. Kicked harder than any 12 I've shot including some single shot 12s. I think reduced .270 would be lighter than that gun.

It really is in a 4-5 lb gun with 3 inch nittros.

He is 6 and tall but thin he has shot my wife's 1187 20 gauge with bird shot through a turkey choke. I had been hearing about the reduced recoil and wanted to see if it was available in the 243. He has a 22 chipmunk that was mine at his age and shoots it pretty well. I may just let him shoot the 243 at a deer like some have said they did before letting him experience the kick and him getting jerky on the trigger.

Plenty of practice with a 22 understanding how a scope works and then the first time both my girls shot my 243 were their first deer. Works great and they still arent gun shy.

TurkeyNeck, I'm not trying to butt-in by saying this, but I might be more concerned with him crawling the stock and getting his eye dotted by the scope with a .243, than I would the recoil. Watch his eye-relief and let him try the rifle on for size with some regular loads. He's probably a tough little kid like most are that age.

Remington doesn't make managed recoil in 243. My son's 11 but he's small. I set him up with a 270 but I cut the stock off 2 inches, added a recoil pad and used the managed recoil ammo. He was hitting the bullseye at 70 yards right out of the box with it. Length of pull and a gun that fit are important for the young ones.

I would add, they need some trigger time with a scope. It takes a while to teach most kids about sight picture and eye relief.

I would take him and the rifle to a gunshop and have him fitted for a nice .243 with a Sims Limbsaver recoil pad. He may be able to shoot a .270 with one. I put one on my Rem .270 a few years ago and it made it a pleasure to shoot rather than a mule kicker.

Forget the 243 and get them a 308, not much difference in recoil. Let them practice with a 22 then only shoot the 308 at a deer and they will never feel the recoil. Plus if they get a little jerky it will put a big enough hole in it to find it. Spent too many nights in the woods looking for bad hit deer shot by jerky kids, their parent were worried about recoil. My son killed his first at 6 years old shooting my 270, killed several with it and never worried about recoil till a bunch of guys in the club were talking about recoil, he heard the conversation and it got him thinking about it and made him skiddish of it for awhile. Took a little to get him over it. Oh a 243 is a fine deer rifle for someone who will put the bullet where it needs to go.
