It seems like I ALWAYS forget something on the first hunt as well. I forgot my bow hanger on mine.....not as crucial as release though.
There are no rainy days...

carry an extra release in yer bag...always.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I got in the habit of strapping my release around my bow handle, works for me.

I usually just drop my release after I get settled in at about 20'.

Be careful how you handle an arrow when you get settled into your tree after hiking up a steep trail for 1/2 mile or so. It's a little different when you're knocking an arrow while sitting down than when you're standing up. I made that mistake one day back when I bow hunted. I barely grazed my string with the edge of my broadhead. That's all it took... just a touch ... and no string on my bow.
