Went for a boat ride yesterday in the Mobile Tensaw / Holland WMA. Saw 11 woodies tucked in a creek off the river. Mostly drakes. Hopefully they will stick around for season

Why wouldn't they stick around? Woodies are just now showing up in central/south Alabama. They will continue to show up and should be plentiful by opening day. At least that's the way it usually works.

Most of them stay year round. If you want to kill wood ducks go to the back of a creek and sit up

I'm new to the delta, I've hunted them in flooded beaver ponds and in creeks at the hunting camp.

They are about the most common duck around. Just go to the Upper Delta if you want to shoot wood ducks.

Any of you lower AL guys know where Smith Lake is? The on the AL river, not the one up here?
I hunted Woodies down there about 2 decades ago. I have never seen so many wood ducks in my life.

It's been so long ago that I don't remember much about it, but the river must have been up because we accessed it from the river.

Well I would say y'all are right. I've seen on average 20-30 woodies everyday I've been out in the lower delta

I know of a place in Tuscaloosa county that it is nothing to go in and see hundreds of them. Too bad I don't have access to that property any more.

I think the Flint River in Madison County is the king of all wood duck lands. I've hunted it over the last 30 years and there are more woodies ( and teal ) than you can shake a stick at. They can be very difficult to hunt though because there is just so much hardwood bottoms around ... so many places they can go in peace and fill their fat bellies
