Any ideas on if the one antler thing is an injury, damaged pedicle or genetics? This deer is clearly mature and a shooter but I don't want to shoot him if the odds are his rack will be normal next year. Any feedback is appreciated.

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Yes, not because it's broke off, but because that is an old guy. He might make it till next year though. I'm guessing he is 5 yrs. Look at the girth on that thing.

It's up to you. Do what makes you happy. Me personally I let him walk in hopes of him having both sides next year...

All the studies Ive seen and been taught say that the other side will be back. I'd let him walk in hopes of no one else shooting it.
BTW if he is 5 that isnt old

It it's the rack you want and you happen to get a shot at him, wait. He probably just knocked one antler off.
A mature buck like that would be fun hunting, one antler or not.
Let us know if you actually get a chance to shoot him or not.

Answer this question and that will give you the answer. If I were to kill him would I mount it? If the answer is no, then blast him. A lot of meat on that fat boy. If the answer is yes, how pretty is a one sided mount?
If your decoy doesnt have holes in it, your not letting him get close enough... J.H.

To 49ers point I just hope I ,or one of my boys, just see him. My gut is to let him walk and plan a nice funeral for him next season...if he makes it and I/we get lucky. My wife and kids named him Elliot after some one antlered deer cartoon character.

If u want meat, shoot a doe. You can't eat the antler.

Looks like he had a antler on that one side at one time or another. I agree that it probably was knocked off somehow. While not a monster rack he does have a good body size. Id give him a pass and let him breed another year.

Would you be proud to have killed him? Have you ever killed a mature buck? If you never see him again would you wish you had shot him?

X2. Horn would just go into a 5 gallon bucket and I don't do that any more. Younger doe would probably taste better if someone really just wanted meat.

Let him go. Next year the other side will be back and he may be even bigger. Don't shoot bucks with potential just for meat. That's like dropping Adrian Peterson in Fantasy Football because he sprained his ankle. He'll be back and bigger and better next year with both sides.
