Just curious, anyone ever killed a deer with one? Will they penetrate a skull?
I guess for sake of arguement if it would go through a 1/2" sheet of plywood it would kill a deer at that range correct? Like 15 yards Im thinking.
Its a debate between me and a co-worker. I say it certainly will.

They will indeed. Ask a game warden, it's a fair bet that more deer have been killed with a properly placed .22 short than anything else.

I wouldnt try it, but i guess if the stars were alighned just right and you had the perfect shot at close range i dont see why not. Anything is possible i suppose.

Dad used them to kill hogs but he was close enough that they probably had powder burns

It will kill a cow or a hog if placed properly, or even if misplaced. If the animal is gut shot, it will die, but not leave a blood trail. It is a slow and agonizing death due to the infection that will set in from the punctured gut. I know because i had some cattle shot this way back in the 60s by some mfsobs looking for fun. We uses 22 shorts to kill hogs to butcher but it was close range (1-2 inches) betwen the eyes so yes it will kill a deer.

My father in law killed several with 22 shorts. He claimed it is the best for deer. Needless to say, we disagreed on this and had numerous arguments about it. He dismissed the point that it is illegal to hunt with.

I've killed a dozen er better with 22 short HPs, and subsonic 22 LRHPs, all one shot kills. Earhole or just behind the eye usually.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Why us a .22 short on deer? An ethical hunter should want to dispatch game quickly. We have all seen deer shot with much larger calibers run for some distance before dieing. Anyone that uses a .22 short or LR on deer doesn't respect the game or game laws.

Anyone that uses a .22 short or LR on deer doesn't respect the game or game laws. Uhmmm, maybe because you're shooting them at night in a sub-division and don't want to attract attention?
