How far will they run a line to your house before you have to pay? Then how much does it cost?

Think its over 300 feet.Not sure on cost but i think if its less than 300ft or if you have a pole in bad shape it dont cost a dime.I had my power moved last week and they took a bad pole up.Cost me 0

This is how an APCO engineer explained it to me:
Alabama Power notes
5:1 ratio
For every $1000/year in revenue, APCO will pay $5000 (one time) for installing lines

Per pole cost is up to $2,500, and a pole can span no more than 350 feet

Sample property is 3/4 mile (4,000 feet) from existing power (to the tract)

4,000/350 = 12 spans

$2,500 x 12 = $30,000 total cost to run lines 3/4 mile

If revenue was $50/month x 12 months = $600 annually
.6 x 5,000 = $3,000 paid by APCO
$30,000 - $3,000 = $27,000 to consumer

If revenue was $100/month x 12 months = $1200 annually
1.2 x 5000 = $6,000 paid by APCO
$30,000 - $6,000 = $24,000 to consumer

Sorry about that.
There are many variables that can influence the cost, like right of ways, access, terrain, etc. And the info I posted is a very general way to estimate the cost. Only an APCO engineer can tell you the exact cost. That being said, the following formula gets you in the ballpark:

Estimated ANNUAL Power bill X 5 = $ Amount APCO will pay to run lines

Divide this number by $2500 (cost per pole) = number of poles they will provide

Multiply this number by 350 (maximum feet per pole) = # feet they can run without charging you


I am no mathematician, but it seems to me the formula can be reduced to:

Estimated ANNUAL power bill X .7 = # feet of service provided by APCO

I am sure there are APCO folks on here, or others with experience that can be more accurate, and I want to learn more as well. I am only repeating a very general formula provided to me by an APCO engineer. Keep in mind, most power poles are not where they can stretch 350 feet, and added costs of removing barriers, obtaining right of ways, etc. can add to the cost.

I not sure about all that fancy stuff but Cherokee Electric is charging $3.00 ft.

Most "spans" (pole to pole) on a single phase or 3 phase line are generally no more than ~250' from my experiences FWIW
