Found some Beautyberry growing yesterday when I was out walking.
Do deer eat this? Do birds eat the berries? I've always seen plants with pods of the purple berries long after the leaves are gone but nothing seems to eat either of them.

Deer do eat French Mulberry, but it's low on the list.

Beautyberry is on the list for deer food, but it varies from place to place on deer usuage. They don't hammer it at our place, but they do browse it.

Where I hunt they really dont mess with it much at all. But we got a lot of Sumac and Greenbriar that they really get on.

They really like it at our place, feeding heavy on it. I have killed deer in Bow season , that when you field dressed them , their insides was purple from eating those berries. You can look at the bushes , and tell where they are eating , as all the low branches will have no fruit.

They hammer poke salad, and the berries will stain you hands.

I am pretty sure , I was setting in thinned out pines (5th rowed)
(the section was loaded with Beauty berry)
and was watching the deer feed on the berries for a while before one
got in bow range (30 yards for me).
I also agree with you that they do eat poke salad. Ive saw that too.

They eat it decent here at the house it is a certain time of year they eat it I believe.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

Per the book Forest Plants of the Southeast and Their Wildlife Uses, it is of medium preference for Whitetails. They will eat both leaves and fruit.
The fruit is a fav of many birds as well as coons , possums and rodents.

It depends how much food you got out there the first year I had my place select cut, they came up everywhere and the deer hammered them but the years after that they only pick at them cause there is so much other food out there.

I've never seen a leaf nipped off of one on our farm. We have so few deer per square mile they have plenty of more preferred food to eat.

I've ate the berries and used rubbed the leaves on to keep skeeters away. It didn't break me out. I've seen deer eat it alot where I hunt

Where I hunt the deer feed on the berries heavily and browse the early growth in Spring.
Also the coyotes eat the berries, which then become bright purple coyote scat in the roads.
