I just fixed the same problem on the same truck. There is a sensor on the transfer case that's bad. The parts about 75$ at the dealership and takes about 20 minutes to fix. Is this it ? Yes

You really should let the computer tell you what it has to say first.
Advance Auto Parts and Autozone have read my computer codes for free. I would go by and see what the code says the problem is.

I had the same problem, no code...I took my 05 Sierra to 3 different shops, the last one a transmission place wanted to tear apart my transfer case to repair some type of actuator end (maybe who knows) gave me a estimate of 600 bucks. I was driving myself crazy couldn't figure out why I would get a different diagnosis at every place. Finally took it to a friend who is a shade tree mechanic....he made a couple phone calls and replaced this very same part. The schematic he gave me which shows the part is TX04-287. On the drawing I believe it is item 38... He gave it to me so I could show all the shops who looked at my truck. Haven't had a problem since...PM me a fax number or e-mail address and I will scan or fax it to you tomorrow. He said it took him out an hour to replace it...

Where is it located on the transfer case ? Follow the wires.

Will do. Do I have to disassemble the transfer case?

I have an 06 chevy z71 had the same problem its the electronic shift located on the side of the transfer case. The power supply runs off the shifter to selector or pushbutton when the shifter goes bad it'll kill the power or make it jump from 2 high to 4 low or 4 high. Its really wired backwards from what you would think.
