'05 Sierra Z71. Service 4wheel drive message appears on initial startup. Changed the push button switch in the cab but nothing on it lights up. Checked all fuses. Any suggestions as to what it could be ?

Some of the actuators were electric, some were vacuum. Mine was vacuum, but was a little older truck. Gotta figure out what's going on at the actuator before you go much further. At least you know now. I found out when I was alone at the club.

I just fixed the same problem on the same truck. There is a sensor on the transfer case that's bad. The parts about 75$ at the dealership and takes about 20 minutes to fix.

49ers link is correct. Encoder motor position sensor. Don't let them sale you the whole piece housing it, you only need the sensor. It's a little black disk about as big a round as the bottom of a spray paint can. I did the same thing as you, I replaced the dash switch and thought that fixed it but it came back on.

It's the flux capacitor.

Check the 4wd fluid. Make sure the reservoir is full. If it is not that try changing the radio station. My 4wd always worked best with country music playing.
