I've got two ten month old labs that stay in the house most of the time. They're brother and sister. They're great with my 5 and 3 yr old. They chew on each other instead of our stuff.

We've got a PomeRat (we think) and a Beagle both are house dogs.
If I had to chose I'd pick the little black mixed breed dog we have over the Beagle.
Beagles are great, BUT Beagles are bred to be pack dogs. If I was dead set on a Beagle, I'd get TWO. They really do need the company of another dog. I thought the Labs I use to have were bad about chewing up stuff until I got an inside Beagle. She's eaten one of everything in the house.
I use to have a pack of hunting Beagles and the one we have is out of hunting stock. If you get a Beagle, I would look for some that have been bred for pets. Ours chases a "rabbit" every morning at 5:30 in the back yard. That rabbit may have been a track laid by a moth, but she strikes a trail every morning and wakes up everybody within ear shot.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

I have 3 Labs in the house. I will have one until the day I die. I have a chocolate lab female. My17 month old daughter falls on her pulls her and everything else and she will walk away or just sit there and the dog is only 3 months old. She has been house trained since after a week that we had her. I have taught her to sit stay and out in two weeks. She can be a pain in the ass sometimes but I love her. She is awesome!

check out the british labs.. i have one that is both inside and outside. She doesn't chew things up and when she comes inside she lays on her bed and behaves. she weighs about 50 lbs and i use her for tracking deer and hogs for some of the non shooting folks at the club.

Can't believe I'm even typing this, but wife was pitching a fit to get a standard poodle. Got to the point it was easier to just get the damn dog (and use it as ammo for rut) than to hear about it. That dog is 5 months old and lets our 7 month old crawl, lay, and pull all over her...without batting an eye.
Plus it don't shed They are the original retriever as well......seriously.

Boykin Spaniel. Most intelligent and best disposition of any breed that I've trained. They are great companion dogs and very social.

Plus it don't shed You will never, ever, under any circumstances regret that dog. You will, in fact, become loyal to the breed. Just my 2cents.

Boykin Spaniel!! Our dog will snuggle with me on the couch & let me cradle her like a baby but as soon as her dad says 'hunt,' she jumps up & is ready to go!! So well mannered, protective, mild tempered & very active. She stays inside all day alone while we're at work...sits on the couch & watches TV!
I hunt just like you, only prettier.
