I'm pretty well set on a lab but my wife wants a smaller inside dog. Our daughter loves animals and we want to get her a companion. Any suggestions?

You can get you a female British lab that might only grow to be 45-50 lbs vs. what we Americans are used to 80-100lbs

Again, not the size you're looking for, but I've got two boxers. Little one is 100 lbs on the nose, big one is 102. My kids (both under 3 yrs) ride them around the house and play with them day and night with nothing negative from the dogs. They're gentle giants. ...but extremely protective at the same time. Best breed I've ever been around.

Labs are too hyper. A Shepard is a good loyal dog. Smaller dog a border terrier is a very smart dog or a coragi.

Smaller poodle, not kidding, you won't regret it.
I have a Mini-Schnauzer that is not typical. If all of them were like him I'd say go with a Mini-Schnauzer.
Depends on what size you actually want. Two of my dogs weigh less than 4 pounds, the Schnauzer is around 18 pounds.
Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.

Check out Original Mt Curs. They are a great all around dog. Some folks have curs or treeing curs but I prefer the Original Mt Cur. http://www.omcba.com/

Beagle is always a good choice for kids,I have a miniature australian sheppard that is the smartest dog I have ever seen.She is very good with my grandchildren.
