I'd try a 150 Nosler Partition instead of a 180. You don't need the extra weight for penetration and the 150 will shoot flatter at normal deer ranges. I've killed truckload of deer with a 30-06 and 150gr Partitions.....

Unfortunately I'm limited to what I can find. I want to stay below 180g but I just can't find any bullet heads that size other than A-Max and Core Lockt

"Bullet heads" is a corruption of terminology from the popular press which consistently refers to cartridges as bullets. The continued use of this misnomer produces a linguistic need to somehow diffentiate the projectile from a "bullet."

Not trying to get in the middle of a debate here, but I shot a 260lb Kentucky buck at 100yds in the front shoulder with a 270 140gr Hornady SST. He dropped like a sack of taters and didnt even kick. The bullet hit the front shoulder and exploded. That shoulder was tore up but nothing else and he was DRT.

If your decoy doesnt have holes in it, your not letting him get close enough... J.H.

Another good data point on the SST. I originally selected the SST because I keep hearing reports like yours ... hunters extremely satisfied with the SST performance. I'm still looking for a supply but it doesn't look good. Thinking about going to Decatur this weekend and trying 3 shops over there ...

I'm still going to keep looking for a good supply of Nosler Partition, I'd like to experiment with them as well. Even if they do shoot quite differently from the SST I'm feeling a need to diversify a little so that I don't get screwed from lack of supply

laugh :Dit's all relative. I shot a blackbird onct with a .220 Swift and a 50 gr bullet at a measured 19 yards. Damn bullet disinfineragated laugh and the result was a feather puff. shocked shocked I shoot a .375H&H with 300gr bullets pretty regular on whitetail deer, it does pretty good with little meat damage.

I hope my spelling and grammar would make my fifth grade teacher Miss Jamison proud. (She was hot as all get out too) laugh

Troy,

Your experiences with the .375H&H mirror my own.

Your poor teacher must have suffered terribly in those long forgotten days before air conditioning.

I'm planning on doing a little study this year on bullet performance from short range 0-200 and long range 200+ out of my .270STW using several different kinds of projectiles. It should be an interesting look into bullet performance from a ultra high velocity cartridge.
