I was talking to a farmer yesterday that always has a great looking garden. He said he used to have problems with deer eating his garden until he started putting pee in a bottle at all four corners of the garden and that is the only thing he has found that will keep the deer away.

This got me to thinking of how may times I have peed from my tree stand. I have peed from my stand only to have deer walk right under me and not seem scared at all. I have even peed while deer were 20 yards away and never spook. However I wonder how many mature deer have never came by because of the pee if any. So why would pee keep deer out of the mans garden but not keep them away while hunting. I am unsure of how the pee is affecting my hunting if any. What are your thoughts?

Let me add that I have talked to several other hunters that pee from their stand and see deer all the time.

Old Wives tail. I have started scrapes and peed in them to see them start getting worked.

Maybe, but its hard to argue with a farmer that has battled deer eating his garden for years and now does not have a problem because he puts pee in a bottle around his garden. I'm not saying it works or not. I'm just confused as to why it works for him but does not seem to scare them off when I'm hunting. Makes no sense to me.

I would assume human pee smells just like any other mammals walking around in the woods. On the other hand I think deer can learn to be afraid of something. If the have no reason to associate a smell with danger then they won't, but if you give them a reason to be scared of something they will avoid it like the plague

There use to be a "professional deer hunter" Bob somebody that did seminars at the Bham deer show. He swore that he attracted many bucks peeing from his stand into the dry leaves. But If I have to pee, I pee!

It could be that that stagnant pee in a bottle allows bacteria to multiply many, many times and that bacteria may be what they don't like?

Don't know. But I do know some of the best deer I've killed came around not long after I got done takin a whiz. One I even remember shooting before I had time to zip up

It would seem logical to me that a few coyote tails or coyote cover scent rags hung off a few poles would keep them out.

Pee is ammonia, regardless of what it come from. IMO they can tell it's pee but not what made it if it doesn't have the hormones in it made by another deer or animal. Human pee would fall under "unknown" in the animal mind. I don't think they go "uh oh, human pee". They will investigate it, and if can't determine what did it, move on.

Low deer numbers.

I heard whitetail biologist, Dr. Karl Miller of the University of Georgia talk about this subject back in the late 90's and when he's hunting, he does not care about his human pee and doesn't hold back. He said he liked to pee in a scrape.

If I have to pee while hunting, I pee without worry.

Maybe the Old Man has some stinking a$$ pee. It probably ferments too, causing it to stink even worse.

Human pee, poo, or gut piles from deer and hogs ... Seen deer walk up to all of them and sniff and not spook away for years.

The deer are working on my plum and pear trees. A lady at the feed store told me yesterday to mix 3 eggs to a gallon of water and spray the trees and the deer would leave them alone.

I think mature deer can distinguish human pee. It's not an unknown. Most of us older hunters have dribble issues after all. Also, if I pee from my stand after drinking the ground smells like Harry's Bar from college days. If I drink a lot of coffee that morning I can catch a distinct coffee smell. When I am in super serious mode I pee in a bottle.

I peed at the base of my tree and had a buck walk from the greenfield toy tree and sniff then returned back to feeding. There were 6 bucks in the field that day

I pee in a bottle. I think that deer can distinguish pee smells,
After all there are fox pee cover scent,coon pee cover scent,
Doe pee scent and so on. Also ant that why a buck checks his scrape to trail a doe that has peeed in it. Dont dogs mark thier territory by peeing in several locations around your yard.
One afternoon, I Took 3 or 4 cans of beer with me to the shooting house on a plot. I had a pee botle , but I had filled it up by about 4:30pm, and at about 5:00 I had to pee bad!
so I open the door to the shootin house just enoug to pee out.
No deer were in sight, but as I was peeing A big ole Doe Started Blowing , and blowed all the way till Dark.

i gotta pee , i pee .

Dang now I have to go pee!

This works but has to be done after every rain.
