How many of y'all who see copperheads find them around the house in flower beds with pine straw?
Suburban areas...That is a VERY common place for them. I've killed many in areas like these or near these when thev've been disturbed by lawn equipment. Sticker bushes, azaleas, flower beds with mulch and straw...great haven....shady areas where they can cool off and then slither to sun to warm up all withing a short radius is what I say is key habitat. Plus lizards and frogs are there to get after the bugs around the plants and in the mulch...so then you get copperheads in ambush mode. They can stay in a 30 foot radius I'd guess for a long while...just ambushing some food and staying still. Every once in a while go for a nice slither with the Mrs. to see what's up, then back for nap with one eye open. If you add in rockier terrain or sloping hillside/retainer wall plus a bird feeder where little chipmunks hang out you increase your odds. I'm waiting for the day when one of my boys gets bitten on the hand...reaching for stray baseballs, footballs, basketballs, etc...without properly looking first puts them at a great risk around my hose or their grandparents home. Hoover is chalk full of copperheads.
