Dallas killer Kimberly McCarthy spent a "routine day" Wednesday in a holding cell just feet from the Texas execution chamber, where, later in the afternoon she will become the 500th Texas killer put to death since the state resumed executions 31 years ago.

Prison spokesman John Hurt said the former home health care worker periodically would be monitored by authorities in the hours leading up to her 6 p.m. execution. Killers typically spend their final hours visiting with family members, lawyers or clergy.

"She laughs and jokes occasionally," Hurt said after visiting the inmate, "but she's definitely serious, pensive, even strained. When I asked her about her appeals, she said, 'My lawyer's done.'"

McCarthy, 52, was condemned for the July 1997 robbery-murder of Dorothy Booth, 71, her neighbor. Prosecutors argued that McCarthy severed her victim's finger in order to steal a ring.

The ring and other items taken from Booth later were converted into cash to buy drugs. During the punishment phase of McCarthy's trial, prosecutors revealed that she also had robbed and killed two other women, both in their 80s.

She also had been convicted of forgery, theft of property and prostitution.

Twice this week the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals rejected McCarthy's appeals.

In her unsuccessful petitions to the court, McCarthy argued that African-Americans improperly were struck from serving on her jury. Only one African-American was included on the jury. McCarthy is black. She also argued that her trial and first appeals attorneys provided ineffective counsel.

McCarthy will be the fourth woman executed in Texas since executions resumed in 1982.

She will be the eighth killer put to death this year.

I pray she is right with the Lord now, but it sure sounds like the state of Texas is doing its citizens a fine service.

I don't understand why they can't kill more of them than 500 in 31 years.

1 a day and they could have freed up a bunch of room for more on death row and I bet the murder rate would be way down.

I don't care if the jury was black, white, mexican or anything else. The only question is was she guilty.
