Just find any river. Take some waders and a float tube. Y'all will have a ball. I have never been to Cooke city but I have been to Ennis 3 times and the fishing in the Madison river was great.

Also take a spinning rod with 8 lb test and some blue fox and panther Martin spinners. The trout and whitefish will love them.

Just find a local fly shop, and they will be happy to point you in the right direction.

I don't know if you have ever trout fished before or not, but if not I would highly recommend hiring a guide for a day to learn the ropes.

Awesome!!! My wife's mom is from Red Lodge, MT and we used to go there every other July 4th from the 95 - 2004 until her great uncles died. My wife's great uncle owned the land where Liver-eatin' Johnson had a cabin. If you call it a cabin... more like a square box made of wood. It's been moved into Red Lodge now but anyway, that is some of the most beautiful country in N. America!

My wife's great uncle, who was a game warden for 33 years in that area took me fishing somewhere around Cooke City and we hiked a LOOONG way into the mountains and fished this crater lake and we caught some huge rainbow trout. I couldn't even begin to tell you where that lake was as this was back in the late 90's. Those lakes' water temp is so cold you can't wade so you'll need waders. Fly fishing is fun but an ultra lite works great too. I was surprised at how many of those lakes and creeks (criks, as they call them) had a good population of trout in them.

It's a different world out there and I loved it.

You and your family are going to have a ball!

I don't know but is the snow going to be a problem? Even in July, the snow wasn't all gone and the snow melt can make those small little creeks dangerous with rushing water flow.

Everyone's advice above is very good!
