Worst I've ever been scared was by a covey of quail busting up right in front of me when I was a kid. Other than that, I was scared of the dark when I was a kid. Never could hunt till dark until I was about 17.

I don't care what anyone says but until you climb up a tree and don't wake the turkeys that are in it an hour before daylight, then half awake hear them take flight 45 mins later three feet above your head.....you don't know how quick you think you can fly!

Some of yalls stories are too good to be lies. the only two times Ive been scared were in the same year. I use to watch a lot of horror movies and after those two times I quit watching them during hunting season and havent had much of a problem again. 1. I was at the camp 1 hour away from any civilation and had hunted all day by myself. I killed a spike that morning and had considered leaving early but since i took vacation and seldom hunt without the kids and was at club all alone I decided to stay. We had a primitive camp and very little cell signal and a old clubhouse with plexiglass windows. A big storm had blown in and the trees started rubbing the tin roof. You could hear the wells squeeking in wind in between howls. I got a little spooked when my gas ran out and I began trying to put a new bottle on for light. As I tried I looked out the hazy window with my flashlight and I thought I saw a hockey mask, I knew it was Jason Vorhees. I immediately shined the light on my gun and machete. The machete seemes inappropiate since Jason killed his victims with one. SO I packed everything in less thann 5 and was loaded and drove 3 hours home. My wife laughed at me all night when I got home and explained why I came home 2 days early. 2. the second story is when I take my wife and 7 year old daughter back with me. They went to outhouse around 9:00pm after we grilled burgers. I was in the process of getting our gear ready for the morning hunt with my 10 year old son when they came back running and screaming that something was after them. They ran over my son and knocked the lantern out of his hand causing immediate darkness and knocking the gear over on me and trampling me. My son began screaming and running behind them leaving me behind. They ran inside and screamed for me to hurry! The shock of hearing them screaming and knocking me down as they ran back past the clubhouse scared the H*ll out of me too! I just froze.... If it had been a bear or something I would have been mauled! lol Come to find out they heard a gas well and thought it was growling at them. Haha...good times. That is what hunting is all about. Sharing memories with those we love.

Forget the scary stories, I remember the fella who told the story about his big bad buddy who wasn't scared of anything watching the guy who lost his fake leg during a hunt in a stump hole and kept on running on his stump. The big ol' boy tossed his cookies there on the spot.

Seth86 I agree 100%.Nothing can scare the chit out of you like turkeys in the same tree with you.I have had it happen to me three times .One time I got crapped on before daylight so no scare there but the other two sounded like helicopters .Nearly made me come outta the pine tree both times.

When I first started hunting I was real young and would sit with my dad. I remember a few times we would be walking back and he would motion for me to stop and be quiet. Then he would say, "I think I just heard a panther. Now on three we are gonna break and run!" He would then take off and I would then ship my pants. What kind of father does that lol?!

When I was youn and hunting with him in Tennessee I decided to go set a couple coon traps one night when we got back to camp. Well after setting them and starting to walk back to camp, little to my knowledge he had cut me off half way and hid in the bushes. The man starts howling at the top of his lungs and I believe I'm about to get eaten. Scared the ship out of me.

so what about the swamps in perry county Me and my buddy Keith got turned around down there one night on the national forest land, anybody on here that knows me knows I'm a pretty big guy(6'3 bout 240 well ol Keith is about 6'6 300+. We finally just sat down trying to get our bearings back no signal on the phones thinking we were going to have to spend the night. When all of a sudden we heard a bell tinkling going around us in a circle. I hollered at it and it just kept on. Can't remember if it was me or him emptied his 7mag and it kept right on we got the hell out of there. Then on the way out our buddy who was hunting down the road had flagged a guy down in a huge orange blazer who had his young son wife and newborn in the truck coming in trying to find us with no flashlight. Guy had a .38 snub nose in his hand I nearly killed him on the spot. Guy said he was down there bow hunting but looking back I think he was making meth.

Had a buddy who had a piece of property off of 14 west of Selma in perry county. One of the ladder stands backed up to a swamp. Towards the later part of the afternoon, you would often hear what sounded like ragtime piano coming from back in there. Don't ever remember staying there til dark.

Good thread. Last November I was climbing down, it was already dark. About 8 feet from the ground I heard movement in the leaves all around me. I stopped and listened and it got right under me. Didn't even move for my flashlight. I started making bleats, just in case it was deer. It stopped then moved again. I yelled "hey hey hey", and went climbing back up the tree. Stopped again and whatever it was just kept moving around. Finally I couldn't hear it anymore so i got down and left the stand on the tree and got outta there. Another time was when I was around 13. I was walking through this field to meet my dad at the truck when a pack of feral dogs showed up about 350-400 yards in front of me but were heading towards me. I dropped to the ground and put my 243 up aiming at them. They got about 70 yards from me, I only head 3 shells and it was a single shot... There were 5 of them. They stopped and started sniffing around and looked my way. Strange enough they cut right and went into the woods. I have in countered wild dogs, not coyotes, 2 more times since then in north alabama.

Wild dogs in swamps of Perry County is what I have encountered. Also one mountain lion. Did have a friend who set in his stand til I drove the truck to his shooting house where my lights would shine under it so I could make sure something was not going to get him. He said he did not know what it was but something was screaming in the Swamp coming towards him right before dark.

Broad daylight, late Dec/early Jan, unseasonably warm afternoon in Perry County, climbed an 18 foot ladder on an elevated blind, and just as my head got to the top of the ladder I see this: Almost did a full gainer off that ladder, lucky I didn't break my neck. Rat snake.
