I have a 2006 Tacoma 4cyl (2TR-FE) engine. I have 130k miles and figured I need to change the timing belt. Called Serra Toyota and they said you do not have to change it until it breaks but my local mechanic said it needs to be done. Having a hard time finding a source I trust on the net.
Is my engine and interference engine where I would have major probs if it broke. Or can I let it go until it breaks then swap the chain?

I don't know if it'll mess up anything if it breaks but I can't understand the logic in letting it break first. Who knows where you'll be when that happens??

Call Marcus with Griffin Automotive in McCalla. He is a member here on Aldeer (marcus1) and is a trusted resource for many of us. He was a master technician at Hoover Toyota for a long time before opening up his own shop. He could answer your Toyota question for sure.
He just did a preventative timing belt kit change out along with water pump on my wife's Honda Van about a month ago. He beat all the prices I checked from places I knew about and did a great job. Had him do the brakes as well.

That is true. I guess I might just stretch it a little longer. I travel quite a bit at times in Alabama and Mississippi. Might leave me in a bind if I let it go until it breaks.
Just trying to figure out how high of a priority this needs to be.

shouldn't need changed at that mileage with a chain. It's most likely an interference engine but the chances of a chain breaking that early are slim to none. I would go with what the dealer says

Just called Serra Toyota again (last time was 6 months ago). The guy said if I look in the manual it says nothing about the timing chain. He said that todays toyotas are designed to last the life of the vehicle. He said some folks are stuck in the old days of changing them at 120k miles but it is not necessary. He said they do very few changes of chains and the chances of a problem are very small.
Now I have to decide if I trust him....

Timing belts will eventually stretch and give you a little warning. Timing chains are more durable, but can break if they decide to. Had it happen on an old Chevy. Luckily it was in my driveway.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

I've never seen a timing chain break in my life. Timing belts are supposed to be changed periodically, usually every 100,000 miles.

No need to change it on that engine. The 22R engines had major timing chain issues and needed to be changed regularly to prevent problems. This is not the case with the '95-up "RZ" and "TR" series 4cyl engines. The timing chain will last the life of the vehicle. Drive it like you stole it.
