My very first job was at age 6, working for a farmer down the road picking cotton. My dad made me do it; said it was time for me to learn how to work for a living. I got .02/lb, and I could pick 50 pounds a day. So on a full day I could make $1. I also had to pick in the afternoons after school; usually made .30-.40 for an afternoon. I worked for him until about age 12 and then moved up to picking squash. I can remember the older cotton pickers moving so much faster than me that I was left alone in the middle of the field. I can remember crying and wishing I were dead. Can anyone top this? 
All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
