I was wondering if cold weaher effects turkeys? I know deer hunting is better when it's colder.

It sure seems that this late prolonged winter blast has kept the turkeys back a couple of weeks. I'll be curious to see what some of the others think, I know just by reading on here its been slower gobbling activity all over Alabama this year. I'm assuming its been the late winter...

Cold is no good

SOMETHING has them pushed back. Had a pic 2 days ago with 24 turkeys in it. Dang things shoulda broke up some I'd think by now. It's gonna happen and we are just in the second week, so there is plenty of time. Normally the last week or 2 is real slow for me, maybe that'll change this year. I do know, if they are doing right, cold weather don't slow them down that much, but considering they are real slow now in my area, cold ain't gonna be much help.

a short cold snap usually don't affect turkeys that much after the breeding starts,but they are still in winter flocks,when it finally starts kicking,we will be fine.

Yep the cold weather has them thinking it's still winter, after all they don't have a calendar so they will get fired up when the weather does!The best is still to come

They are behind a couple weeks it would appear, birds still in winter flocks. Gobblers still bunched up in some places. It won't be king and all will be good to go.

I love cold still mornings after they get busted up and breeding starts. I think the high barometric pressure makes them gobble better. What we are dealing with now with cold days over and over has to push back the breeding cycle though.

I agree. I managed to kill one of four toms that were in a group this past friday. No hens in sight. They were not gobbling, not responding to calls at all. I just happened to be able to get into the right spot.

Yes I actually heard that statement being made this week. It sounded to me like someone was trying to look for an excuse to fish or paint their wifes toenails to me because the birds haven't even got cranked up breeding yet.

Mid 30's and snowing here today. I saw a gaggle of birds in a field this morning with several strutters on the way in to work. Cold or not, they are trying to breed.

Them sumbucks can try all they want....they don't have to worry about me foiling their efforts (don't have to worry much when the weather is beautiful ). Unlike deer hunting, turkey hunting is supposed to be fun....ain't nothing fun about highs in the upper 30's and lower 40's, the wind blowing 30 mph, and it spitting snow. It sux sitting here at work but it don't suck nearly as bad knowing that I've saved a vaction day to be used later when the weather is better.

Can't remember it being this cold and windy this late in March... But then again I sometimes have trouble remembering two weeks ago.

As cold and windy as it is in the flatlands, the Skyline WMA must be covered in ice at least 5 feet deep.

In my area (west of B'ham), opening weekend they were still in their winter groups from what i saw. By the end of last week, the Toms had broken off from the hen groups...but we're still together.
I'm a newby to turkey hunting, so be easy if I'm way off. Shouldn't they (Toms) be spitting up, and easier to call in the next few days or so?

I sure hope they are butch. I got 10 days off starting this friday.
