I got a big Scag here at work and its a nasty grass cutting BEAST but for what you are describing, a nice smallerish Husky. Not the ones from lowes or HDepot, one from a real dealer. I recommended one to a buddy several years back that has about 5.5-6 acres to cut and he loves his.

i got the badboy 60" cut from tractor supply. its freakin awesome and it costed $5000 but instead of a crappy stamped cutting deck it has a 1/4" welded steel deck and hydraulic drive. for your yard you would only need the 48" deck though, i think the 48 has the welded deck but it doesnt have hydraulic drive? i think it is priced at about $3500. i cut 3 acres with my 60" about once every 1 to 2 weeks and i have had it for a year and i love it. i can cut 3 acres in a little over an hour.

I'm on year 7 with cub cadet 50" kohler courage engine.
3000.00
Buddy of mine bought a bobcat last year for around 5000.00, 48" I think.
It was actually considered comercial grade I think.

I bought a new snapper from a snapper dealer 3 yrs. ago.
Great mower, I've owned snappers in the past and all gave exceptional service. I've got 1.5 acres here in central Fl.
I mow ALOT!!!!!!!!

I'd get a used commercial mower. Exmark makes great equipment

I bought a new Scag Tiger Cat in August but its a commercial mower. Little more than your budget.
For your budget I'd look at a Hustler or a Husqvarna.

Id buy a used exmark if the budget is 5000 You said 'hilly' terrain. Good luck with a ride-on mower for this. Ex-mark turf tracer hydro. You can get a brand new 48" Hydro for under 5k and it will be the last mower you ever buy. Just make sure it has a Kawasaki power plant. PM me if you need any more info.

I've got a 48" Hustler Sport.
I had trouble when grass was growing and sappy or a little damp with it being able to throw out the clippings. They would hang between the deck and the blades. I put a set of scag blades on it....problem solved. It does a great job. I was told they have that problem with the 48" deck for some reason, but now it works like it should.

my father in law has a cub cadet zero turn that is a piece of junk. he works on it more than he cuts grass with it. he told me not to get one.

at least check out the bad boys at tractor supply. in my opinion a bad boy is right between a commercial mower and a homeowner grade which means it is not built flimsy like a home owner with a stamped deck that bends everytime you hit something but it doesnt cost 9,000 like the commercial grade either.

I cut just over 2 acres with my John Deere Z445. I got the 52" deck and can cut my yard in about an hour. I have nothing negative to say about it.
I would look at a simplicity since you are on hilly terrain. They have the independent suspension that makes for a smooth ride. My brother in law has one that he uses commercially and loves it as well.
