I'd say that BMI is a good way to calculate statistics to profile a general population with similar nutrition and exersice habits.

It is a terrible way to profile an individual though. Example - Insurance companies will gig a guy who is 5'9" and 195lbs. who holds multiple world records in powerlifting but stays at 12% bodyfat; or a firefighter that lifts weights; or a high school senior playing linebacker.

Another reason to hate the BMI is because the government loves it.
