can someone explain to me the logic that so many clubs are coming up with about not shooting does on greenfields? if we didn't shoot em in a greenfield we would never kill but one or two verses 12

The logic for us and a couple of other clubs that I know of is to not kill the does on the fields so that they will remain comfortable in coming on to the fields. This in turn has produced more mature buck sightings on the fields. Especially during the rut as more does are comfortable coming into fields then the bucks will follow. We can kill does by getting off of the fields and into the woods. It has also increased sightings on fields in general. I guess it comes down to what your specific goals are and what type of terrain you are hunting. If its all young pines and you have nothing to hunt but fields I guess it might be harder to hunt the woods. I will say that we kill several good bucks on fields and I don't know if we would or wouldn't if we did shoot does on fields all of the time. I also know some clubs that just kill does on certain fields. I think you just have to decide what works best for your particular hunting situation in achieving your goals.

The logic is very simple...your greenfields are used as DESTINATION fields and FOOD plots..not KILL plots.
It allows you to see more deer. and in particular, your deer will feel much more secure and will feed there daily.
We never kill ANY deer other then MATURE bucks in our green fields.
We ACTUALLY get to kill them as they come out to chase does in BROAD daylight!
I hear so many people complaining about not seeing any deer in their green fields...but thats only after they shot 5 does during the first week of the season. They cant understand that the deer know that you step out there in daylight..you die. Well...deer figure that out pretty quick!
Not shooting does in your greenfields will also allow more deer to bed around them and use them so youll see more deer peroid.

I could never understand shooting does off a greenfield then sitting on them day in and day out watching GRASS GROW and not seeing squat...and then complaining about lack of deer sightings.

shooting them in your green fields will condition them to only go there at dark...explaining why so many people ONLY see deer in the green fields at last light. Its really not to hard to figure out.

All of the above^^^. We'll shoot a doe or two off our big plots in bow season and first week of gun season. After first week of gun season, no more doe rollin'. Then very limited hunting and only "shooter" bucks, it works. My son killed a 130" 10 pt and I killed a 147" 11 pt off our biggest plot this year. In years we kept banging does, a dumb 2.5 YO would be the best thing we could hope to see on the plot. Like I said it works, I've seen the light.
If plots and fields are the ONLY place you can get them, I'd hammer them in bow and 1st week of gun season, then shut it down. My $.02
A large plot, with high quaility "greens" planted in it, surrounded by super thick hardwood cut over and kept quiet is legal bait....for bucks too. wink

No doubt it works.

HUNTING (i.e. shooting/killing) pressure is what deters deer movement. Deer will become accustomed to human activity as long as they don't feel threatened. The deer at my Camp are proof of that. There is usually 1 to 5 out there at any given time. They hardly look up when you crank your truck. BUT, walk up on them out in the woods and watch what happens!!! They tear out like a bunch of raped-apes!

Matt Brock says it has no effect on bucks. I beg to differ.

Best thing we ever did at our Club we see 30 plus deer on fields at times and our buck sightings have gone way up 2-3yr old bucks walk out like they own the place , so hopefully before long we'll have 4 and 5 year olds walkin out doing the same .
Several kids have taken really nice first bucks off our fields
as a rsult of this practice .

We may have taken Matt out of context, if not, I beg to differ as well,on both bucks and does. As I said, I've seen the light.

Boy I am glad to see this thread. This very subject is up for debate on our club and T certainly need your input here. T believe this has been our problem for years. Our thought process has been to shoot as many does as possible in order to get the b/d ratio tighter,,,but what has happened is that we hardly ever see does anymore after a few are taken. It's becoming painfully obvious now.

I started hunting more in the woods this season and always saw deer. My sightings were generally in the 8-10 am hours..and whenever I took someone with me,,i'd tell them to sit till at least 10 am. This worked out for a guest as he took a nice 8pt,,cruising around at 9:30 am. I believe most others at our place generally get there about daylight and sit till maybe 8:30 if they havent seen anything..in my experience, they are leaving at the start of the best times to be there.

We've got way too much exposure on our plots. The houses are directly on top of the plot (well, right on the edge, but in well clear visibility). Some plots have roads going thru them...several houses are postioned where your entrance to the plot requires you to walk all the way across the plot. I believe my game cam activity plays into this as well. Cams are in the plot as well and a lot of times I'm in there checking them after a hunt. Please feel free to make your suggestions here,,,rant/rave/rail all welcomed as well!

I believe all of this must be evaluated and a new method should be considered. I'm not of the thought to take out shooting does all together, but I believe a lot of work could be done to free up some of the pressure and exposure we're putting on the green plots.

thanks!

Roger we have roads going thru our fields and it doesn't seem to bother them any, as long as it is done correctly. No four wheelers on the place just trucks and golf carts, and you have to be in your stand or at least the area your gonna park an hour before daylight. My best field this year I either walked across it or rode across it with my brother on his golf cart and seen plenty of deer.

O.K. Guys just wanted your thoughts on this. I have to disagree with most of your reasoning on this idea. I have been deer hunting for over 40 years and managing leases for over 20. i have had my present lease of 920 acres on QDM for 8 years now with 120 acres of this across the road being bucks only. i have seen no difference in any of our sightings of bucks or does over the years that i would consider being the result of shooting does on fields or not. i do think that a lot of this has to do with location, pressure and deer density. i had 5 does in the field at 4:30, shot the biggest one (#125) and at 5:05 the other 4 were back in the field. At 5:35 a 7 point came running in,ran off the does and was headed towards the down doe in the field when i busted his a##. So i don't buy the doe greenfield stuff. Just wanted to know if you guys knew something i didn't. Don't think so! THANKS

If you had yo mind made up,why'd you ask? Looks like several of us are believers^^^, that is if ya wanta get mature bucks out there. I 'll tell you for sure , up in the hardwood moutains, you hunt a plot alot and bang every doe sticks it's head out, won't be long you won't see many does and you can forget bout seeing a mature buck with any regularity. That's a fact Jack.

Wow i think 7STW got his feelings hurt or has an attitude problem. I guess 20 years has made him stuck in his ways. Don't be butt hurt when someone has a difference of opinion, you should be old enough to know that by now.

We use the greenfields to try to kill our self imposed number od does. If we didn't, it would be hard to come anywhere near our number. We aren't too fired up about hunting from a box on open land. We may stop around the first of January. Mixed reviews on what effect it has on our deer.

I too have shot a deer in a plot several times when the other deer in the plot never left, or left and came right back out. I think if you hunt a plot like you describe, it won't be long until you won't see any does on the plot because you shot them.
