If he has air vents could they put sleeping gas in it and put them both asleep then break in some how. May be built well enough you can't break in.
Problem with that is they don't know what kind of a situation he's put the boy in. He may have him booby trapped or the entire shelter rigged to explode. He also could shoot the kid the very second he gets a whiff of something in the air.
